i think bailey is verrrrryyyy overated he is now good enough to play first grade but not origen or tests he played crap on all his rep games he couldent defend well and senior made him look like a wimp.
I do like to see sharkies players play origin and tests but phill is not good enough maby for origin.
he should no way be paid that much money id get rid of him instead. if he accepts less keep him otherwise use the money to buy someone worth that money like senior or someone. he can tackle.

Forget about leading try scorer crap & out of position nonsense.
200k a year is definitely Baileys asking price.
last year he lead the "have a f**king go club"
Whilst I think his rep honours were premature, he was there because he "had a f**king go"
If he keeps doing that, for 200k, I'll be more than happy.

Even ET had contract negotiations at different stages of his career. In retrospect, he would never had left, but you don't tell the buyer that, do you?

That ET really was poison wasnt he?!

But 200K for a stop gap player like Bailey is just a bit too much I reckon. You have a good point about him having a go though BTR

Stop gap???

Where would you rate him amongst our players for last year? He was easily one of our best and should be paid accordingly. $215k a year is on the mark.

sorry
i'll clarify
when he came to sharks he was a stop gap measure and he's made his money here
he should be paid fairly i'll agree but $215,000 a year is a huge deal for someone who is a rising star

Ok I'm not a Sharks fan, and I don't really like Phil that much, but in all honesty - you'd have to assume that most rep players are earning 200K a season, right?

If he is a "rising star" then he won't hang around here if he can get $215k elswhere and we offer $100k a year as some people suggest.

Do we need him next year? Yes.

What is he worth? Origin, Kangaroo and one of our best last year - atleast $200k.

maybe Frenzy or one of the other smart guys in here might have a list of approx figures our players earned last year. maybe then we can see what he would rank in the team for money earners

surely he would be top 5

people ahead of him - Kimmorley, Peachey, Stevens, Beattie????

for a top 5 player, $215,000 is pretty good value for a clubs point of view

Yeah!! No way was he a stop gap player. HE was easily, and consistently, one of our top 3 last year in almost every game last year

He certainly deserved to be SOO - I don't really think he deserved the Test spot.

The basic question is: Will he improve?

If he is now the best he can be then certainly 200K is too much. But if he can improve say 10% in 2004 and again in 2005 then we will have got a bargain. So I think 600K over 3 years is fair enough. If he get 650 then he's done some good negotiating.

My belief is in the latter- he's enthusiastic, he's strong, he's a great second-rower who can fill in anywhere - reminds me a lot of Jason Croker in that respect.

Just BTW: Dean Treister is definitely not shite and he'd be a great addition to the team. 28 is not old. The main reason I'd like him back is because the team is generally dispirited - has been all year. Deano puts that spirit out there and we could use a big dose of it.

His a future captain. His a rep player(even though we all know how he got the australian spot) and the club wants him to stay.

His only 24, and for 3 more years we will get the best football out of him. The price is a little high but its the money the club put away for Devere me thinks.

Plus remember he'd be on his current contract so he'll try and grab as much as he can.

Make it $200k even and then add on unlimited haircuts for the duration of the contract as a bonus. He is sure to accept!

For those people bagging my reaction....

Its not the fact i that i hate the figure of 215+ a season.......Its a pretty reasonable figure, considering we are probably yet to see his best.

Its the fact he hasnt accepted it... Its the fact he still thinks he's worth more

Its the fact he's talking it up in the media, like "I'd go to any club if they offered me 10k more"

If he takes it, good on him, if he doesnt, he's a joker who believes his own hype.

$215,000 a year isn't that much for a NSW & Australian Rep player...

However, he is in sore need of an attitude adjustment. The bloke isn't that good a player...

Cheers,

$215K a year is pretty good for a rep player. I have no problem with it so long as he continues to improve and doesn't do to us what Dykesey did to Parra.

Aaron Cannings signed with Parra for 230K, i think an Australian rep is worth the same as Cannings who has played about 12 first grade games

We apparently paid $180,000 for Merritt.

We paid Vagana what, $350k?

Work it out from there.

$215k is market value. If the Sharks offered that then others must of offered similar

If that's his market value, then he is worth the money.

He's more than $35k better than Merritt I would think.

Bailey has also been pissing me off with his recent comments. However I rather keep him than lose him and I think $200K is a reasonable amount to offer him. The sallary cap is 3.7 million, so he would only be getting 1/17th or 1/18th of the cap. Thats not too much in my opinion.
