On field markings

When did Fox start to super impose field sponsor markings into the picture?

I was at Parramatta Stadium and on the big screen all of the markings were present, but at the ground the only logo actually painted on the field was the NRL logo.

Also watching the Cows-Penrith game there was a close up of a player tackled with no logo but when they went to the wide shot he was standing on the orange logo on the 10m line.

EDIT: Watching the end of game highlights and the logos are nowhere to be seen. WTF is going on?

Just seen the highlights on FSN and you're right - no sponsor markings on the replays. Could it be linked to the fact that it rained all week? Usually wet surfaces make it difficult to paint on markings.

it's called virtual advertising, rather than having ad breaks like Channel 9 during play

yep, I've seen it in other sports ( like Premier League, AFL ) to show graphics or team logos

The advertising is generally painted on the field though. (In the nrl)

Only thing I can think of is the weather, or Ben Roberts salary has taken a chunk out of the greenkeeper budget.

no, as I wrote earlier it's virtual advertising & uses software that's previously been used for team logos or stats in other sports ( both Fox Sports games tonight had it ) - purely a coincidence there was rain in the lead up to both games.

There were still NRL & Telstra logos in the usual spots on both grounds. If you watch carefully the virtual signs are only there on wider shots, not close ups.

Maybe, but they were able to paint the NRL Premiership logo.

Anyway, they have done well to place the logos in the correct part of the picture.

Was present for both Channel 9 games on Friday as well, it's going through a full trial this weekend.

Only the NRL Telstra Premiership logo and "nrl.com" are painted on the ground, everything else is digitally inserted in the two distant broadcast angles. Doesn't appear on the close-up.

IMO it's a much better way to do it and makes the field at the ground look markedly better. Might even save A-League fans whinging the surfaces are getting damaged.

I didn't even notice they were doing this, looked very natural.

About time they did this. Save us another f**k up like in the U20s semi final a few years back when the ref couldn't tell if a line dropout went 10m because of the stupid advertising

Yeah, just had a look at the 2 Channel 9 games & noticed it this time around ( was watching with beer goggles on Friday night ). It creates opportunities to have different sponsors at different times of a game on the "same part of the ground", plus Fox Sports could have 1 set of sponsors for Holden Cup & a different combination for NRL on the same part of the ground.

I was watching an ice hockey game a few weeks back (not something I regularly do) and picked up on the fact that there was advertising digitally imposed on the glass behind each goal. It was very well integrated and took quiet a while to realise it was in fact not physically present. Again the low close shots where it wasn't present gave it away.

The interesting thing in the hockey game was that the digital advertising changed as the game went on. Not frequently like the sideline LCD advertising hoardings but approx every five minutes or so. You never saw it change on screen, the camera would simply pan back to that end of the arena and the advertising had changed. Again, it was all very subtle. This opens up all sorts of options for organisations like the NRL.

One of the first complaints I get when I show a Rugby League game to Americans brought up on a diet of NFL and college football is how distracting all the on field advertising is. They are literally amazed how much the NRL has, for want of a better word, "sold out" to sponsors and advertisers. Of course we all understand why this is, the game has been run on the smell of an oily rag for years. It needed the money. But it's still interesting to witness outsiders first impressions.

With on field advertising restricted to the digital domain it opens the possibility of showing different ads on the field in different markets and even rotating those off screen as ice hockey is doing. One feed for Australian television could have sponsors inserted for the domestic market and other feeds for international markets could have foreign sponsors inserted or even be completely clean in line with any local expectations.

Edit: or user could pay to have the ads removed...

Leigh.

It's called advertising.

It happens in sport occasionally.

Like one time, when I was watching the cricket, they had this little scrolling advert at the bottom of the page while the game went on. That was advertising too!

Crazy stuff though.

I think 34 players getting tackled and running around with long studs would damage the playing surface more than a bit of paint.

Paid attention to it in this afternoon's Nine match. It is done pretty well, although once you notice it can be slightly disconcerting when the advertising is absent for the play of the ball and then it appears for the wider angle. There's a moment of cognitive dissonance.

Nonetheless, if it leaves the field looking cleaning in situ I am all for it.
