One Man Team

As Knights fans we've all heard the phrase more often than we'd like. Usually from other teams' supporters. Those who like to throw it in our faces most often are usually Roosters fans. So I find it quite amusing to see just how well the Roosters are going without Fittler. Every chance of not making the semis.
Yes, the Knights may end up with the wooden spoon, but any year that the Roosters don't make the semis can still be considered a good year.

We along with Cronulla (Kimmorley), Brisbane (Lockyer), Canberra (Smith), Roosters (Fittler), Warriors (Jones), St George (Barrett), Parra (Hindmarsh), Penrith (Gower), Tigers (Prince), Melbourne (orford), Manly (Monaghan), Bulldogs (Anasta) and Cowboys (Thurston) are all one man bands.

We have great players in our teams but if the player in brackets were to go down in round 1 then i would highly doubt that teams ability to make the finals.

Souths are a no man team and the Roosters have proven how important Freddy was to them.

The point being that this year we lost, regardless of whether Johns was there or not. He had an effect on the game, he wouldn't be being paid $500K a year if he didn't, but the bulk of our problems weren't the result of not having Johns.

Fittler's absence all season has decimated the Roosters. The stats always proved Fittler's loss to the Roosters was more significant than losing Johns. Their whole season now stands as a testament to how much they fall apart without their experienced number 6.

It did, but they wouldn't accept it.

It's much more fun to highlight perceived weaknesses in the other teams than focus on your own deficiencies... as Einstein once said: "if the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts".

Yeah, I find it quite amusing too that the Roosters are struggling, don't worry about them being every chance to miss the finals, they will miss the finals. They are gone. But whats even more amusing is the fact that the Johns-less Knights this time last year (I know he played 2 games, but still) were still every chance of making the finals, yet the Roosters are no chance. I think they should have thought long and hard about their one-man band calls, because karma is a wonderful thing. What goes around, comes around.

Well like making the semi's EVERY year for the past 10 in a row AND making four out of the last five grand finals is something the Rooster can be very proud of. Its something the Knights have never managed to come close to. So before karma comes back to bite you lot, dont get into Rooster bashing mode or we may just get the Wooden Spoon something the Roosters arent on the verge of this season Jobbie.

Who cares if Newcastle are a one man team? They're winning games, and that's all that matters..right? If you have one player than can influence a game that much, more power to you I say...

The only problem, of course, is if that one player gets injured or retires...as we've seen with the Roosters this year and the Knight's when Joey's out.

I'm just curious, did you actually read the thread?

Skimmed over it.. I was basically just re-iterating the point I guess..

And perverse...what's wrong with the 2nd paragraph? It's true...the Knights couldn't win a game without Johns this year..and now that he's back and playing well..what have they won? 5 of there last 7 or something? I dunno..but I don't think they'd be getting the same results if he wasn't in the team.

He is such a dominant player, and there is no denying that. If he's not there it leaves a significant hole in the team. What's he supposed to do? Not play as well?..be less dominant? I know Knights fans don't like being called a one man team, but seriously?..do you care? I mean, you have the best player in the world at your club..if he can win you games singlehandedly, then let him do it. Winning's winning, right?

I'm not trying to take pot shots at the Knights or anything.. I actually have a soft spot for them and would like to see them in the top tier of sides once again. It doesn't seem right seeing them at the bottom of the ladder..

But Johns was playing at the beginning of the year, for what 5 or so rounds and we couldn't win a game then even with him in the team. Fair enough he was coming back from a major injury but still, he was there.

Every team has one, maybe two, players that their team bases their play around...

It's a simple concept called "structure"...

To be fair, from my experience here most of us Roosters fans tend to be fair and accepting. Of course we have our extremists... the undesirables, as do all other supporter groups here. But, to judge the rest of us based on the minority is a little unreasonable. It'd be like me basing my assessment of Knights fans on UT, Broncos - Kaz, Bulldogs - 0neye, etc.

As for the topic, I think you'll find most of us knew we were going to struggle without Fittler. Granted, we didn't think it'd be this bad, but we've known for a long time just what Fittler meant to our team. I remember watching games where we'd have a virtually unbeatable lead and Freddy would get rested with 15-20 minutes to go. All of a sudden, the opposition would be back in the game and we'd have to bring him back on to save the game.

It's even more obvious how good he was when you realise how much he carried Finch for two years and even made him look half decent at times. However, when you look closer at our season you can see it's not just because Fittler is gone. The first game we lost was Finch's first game for the year. During his suspension, we beat the Knights 32-2. Yes, Freddy was that good, but Finch is also that bad. Because of how much he covered for Finch, losing him was like losing two players.

Johns was in the team at the start of the year too. We didn't win while was gone, but we didn't win when he returned either. Our recent success can be put down to Johns, Buderus, Simpson and others all being back and the replacement players for the many injuries all stepping up.

I wasn't intent on labelling all Roosters fans with my statement, hence the use of the words "most often" and "usually". It just seemed that whenever we played them the topic would be brought up, admittedly by the usual suspects. I just thought the irony was worth a mention.
