One of the reasons why Dragons are NOT performing ...

The past few years the Dragons have scored most of their points from set plays and penalties up field.
Just looking at the stats on http://www.nrl.com/TelstraPremiership/ClubStats/tabid/10254/Default.aspx
The Dragons has received the least penalties compare to the 15 other teams.
The referees are not giving the Dragons a fair share of the penalties.
The Storm have received 38 more penalties then the Dragons this year.

The Dragons penalty count for, is the lowest in the NRL.

See below the top eight.

Teams Penalties for
Strom 133
Sea Eagles 127
Broncos 99
Cowboys 111
Dragons 95
Warriors 113
West Tigers 115
Knights 125

Yeah but can't blame "refs not giving fair share of penalties" for a slump, c'mon!

If you really want the main reason its simple: Wayne Bennet is leaving.

Not to be too harsh to the adoring V lovers but IMO: Dragons are all pretty average players that are just extremely well coached and disciplined. Seeing some of the massive games you've pulled brilliant wins out of this season, I would still expect you to get that form/discipline back. As a Dragon hater, I certainly hope not...

It does, we are struggling to get out of our own half of the field.
Others teams are getting MORE piggy back penalties up field.
When the Dragons are in a better field positions they play better and have more self-confidence to play and have a better attitude to score points.

Good field position = good set play= return set or try.

I hate to admitted it but most of our trys in 2010 have started from piggy back penalties up field.
The Referees are not giving us our fair share of 50-50 penalties in 2011.

I'm not going to grasp at the nasty referees straw.

I get sick of watching Boyd giving his 5 second death stare at the whistleblowers almost every single time somebody has the gall to tackle him. His interminable play the balls while bleating for a penalty are one reason we aren't marching up the field a little faster.

So what you are saying is that boyd tries to get up quickly to play the ball but is held down longer than normal which is about 4 seconds per tackle. He give a 2 second death stare to appeal.....

Thank you, you have confirmed that the Dragons are NOT getting the 50 - 50 calls.

Penalties or not if we fire up and stop feeling sorry for ourselves then we are a chance, a chance to prove why champions should never be written off. If we don't make adjustments we "WILL" go out without even a whimper.

It's hard to be disciplined by a revered father figure when you know he's leaving you at the end of the year.

Gee, my pleasure.

Were we getting crappy less than 50-50 calls while we had lost only one game in the first 13 rounds?

There is a hell of a lot more things wrong with this team at the moment than a lack of penalties.

You are dead right on the money there...
See that several times a game sometimes from him, & that's on top of the bone lazy attitude & arrogance on display.
Why can't this softcock leave us now & give someone who actually busts their ass a go at fullback....

I accept that our defence isn't as strong as early this year and all of last year.

But when you don’t get a fair share of 50-50 penalties then you defend more and attack less.

The Storm are on average receiving about 4 more extra penalties per game then the Dragons.

24 more tackles and defending the Dragons have to do.

24 fewer probabilities of scoring a try.

24 fewer probabilities of receiving another penalty.

24 fewer opportunities to kick for field position.

24 more opportunities for a forward ala Ryles style to walk in a try.

2010Dragons, you are the font king.

Please don't highjack this thread topic, I want the media to jump in here and read it and make a big deal of it in the news for the Dragons sake.

The media should know we are getting shafted by the NRL / REFEREES this year....must be our turn again. :x:x

Where is Nathan Brown when you need him to speak to the Media!!

I must say that in the game against the Broncs we were definately shafted by the refs.

If you're fair dinkum, then perhaps you should present your argument in a manner that doesn't look like kindegarten material. But FTR, I don't think you're fair dinkum.

Blaming the refs... please... Penalties don't cause players to drop balls or miss tackles. Some of the penalties were rubbish, sure. But it's no excuse. It's an old cliche, but good teams beat bad refs.

And when Brown gave that spray in 2008, he said if the Storm can get away with dodgy play in the ruck, then it should be a free-for-all for all teams. He was merely saying what a lot of coaches were thinking, and few came out and agreed with him. He wasn't looking at penalty counts.

I understand where you are coming from, no fan enjoys missing out on the so called "rub of the green" or getting a raw deal in the penalty count.

But I honestly can't complain about the referees being responsible for our problems when my team is simply being out-enthused and ultimately outplayed. Sure it's nice to get a relieving 4th tackle penalty to get you into an attacking position, but you can't rely on this.

We are missing tackles all by ourselves at the moment. I don't want tomorrows Telecrap to be headlining "Whinging Dragons Fans Blast Referees for being Cause of Slump"

We're better than that.

That's the thing, it'll just be one looking for the ref excuse, but by the time the tabloid gets hold of it, they'll be making the whole Saints fan base sound like Easts and Canterbury combined.
