Any chance we can develop him into a fullback?

We desperately need a fullback for 2020
No. Saab is an out and out winger. He has come through the grades as a winger, which is quite rare. Most first grade wingers would mostly have played centre, 5/8 or fullback during their juniors.

How long ago was everyone saying the same thing about Aitken?
Two different players. You're judging Saab on one play.

He should never have been in that position. With seconds left on the clock and the ball heading that way, there should have been at least three other players scrambling to cover.

I was impressed, he stepped up well and wasn't phased. Let's see how he goes.

DRAGONS

How Saab's emergence enabled Dragons to snare Norman

Jason Saab grew up playing in a cardinal and myrtle South Sydney-style jersey and his father is a member of The Burrow but the 18-year-old winger hopes Friday night’s debut against the Rabbitohs will be the beginning of a long career with St George Illawarra.

Saab, who played juniors for Merrylands Rams, is considered a future star and Dragons coach Paul McGregor has been waiting patiently all season for him to finally become available for NRL selection this week.

So highly regarded is Saab at St George Illawarra that the club declined the opportunity to sign an established winger at the end of last season in the knowledge that he was coming through the ranks.

The decision enabled the Dragons to bring Corey Norman to the club a season earlier after securing him to replace Gareth Widdop and he is set to play alongside the 195cm Saab for years to come as the rookie winger has been signed until 2022.

St George Illawarra director of rugby league pathways Ian Millward said the club hoped Saab would follow in the footsteps of Jason Nightingale and enjoy a lengthy career with the Dragons.

Rabbitohs v Dragons - Round 19

“We’ve never signed anyone as young on such a long contract but for us it was a no-brainer,” Millward said. “Speed-wise he is really good, he jumps excellently in the air, he is low maintenance off the field and he comes from a good family.

“We knew the club would be looking for taller, bigger wingers so we decided to put him on a four-year contract.”

Halfback Ben Hunt, second-rower Tariq Sims, prop Blake Lawrie and 17-year-old SG Ball playmaker Jayden Sullivan are currently the only other players committed to the club for as long, while prop Paul Vaughan has an option for the 2022 season.

Remarkably, no other club had shown interest in Saab until he was selected for NSW Under 18s last season and he had never been identified by Parramatta for a junior representative team.

Saab came to St George as a 16-year-old and what triggered the interest of Dragons officials wasn’t his performances in games but the results of testing for his acceleration, leap and strength.

“He was right up there with some of the really good players who have come through our ranks,” Millward said. “Then, in his second year of Under 18s, he just got better and better.”

The Eels and other clubs became interested just as St George Illawarra were preparing a deal for Saab but he told officials he didn’t want to play anywhere else.

Why McGregor changed his back three

“He said, ‘The Dragons gave me an opportunity so I want to stay here’,” Millward said. “His dad is a mad Rabbitohs fan. He has come to some meetings with me with his Rabbitohs jumper on and he sits in The Burrow with his mates so it is quite ironic Jason’s first game is against Souths.”

The Dragons decision to sign Saab on a long-term contract was vindicated when he starred at last year’s Australian Secondary Schools championships on the Gold Coast, along with Cronulla centre Bronson Xerri, and was chosen for an end-of-season tour to England.

After commencing pre-season training in January, the Dragons agreed Saab should start in Under 20s for six weeks before advancing to the Mathew Head-coached Canterbury Cup team.

As one of six development players, Saab could not play NRL before June 30 and McGregor waited until after his commitments with the NSW under 20s team to select him.

“We are having an early look at an exciting talent for the future,” McGregor said. “He has been putting pressure on the players consistently throughout the year in reserve grade with some really good performances but we weren’t allowed to use him earlier.

“He was just playing too well to leave out and we want to give him a taste of first grade now. He can get nice and high, when he gets into open space he is quite quick and defensively he has a good understanding of what he needs to do.”

Meanwhile, Mikaele Ravalawa, injured winger Jordan Pereira and forward Lachlan Timms joined NSW Women’s captain Kezie Apps for a surprise appearance at training for players in the “Score Dragons” community program to announce they had received a St George Bank funding grant.

Now in its sixth season, the “Score Dragons” is a joint initiative between St George Illawarra and The Disability Trust to include players with disabilities in a local Illawarra competition and earned the club the 2015 NRL Community program of the year award

Apart from the defensive misread at the end he had a solid game. He almost caught the ball from the short kick off too and probably could have held on if he hadn't flipped awkwardly.

With some time he would become a monster under an attacking high ball, and also has a long arm span to put on a good fend with some speed.

Does Saab have a preferred side? If not then I'd have Rav with Lomax and Saab with Lafai.

Mixed emotions for Saab after two-try debut

Dragons rookie Jason Saab’s mother Alysia began crying before she presented the 18-year-old with his debut jersey and she had to fight back tears again after he scored two tries in a heartbreaking 20-16 loss to South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

Until Rabbitohs winger Campbell Graham scored as the full-time siren sounded to snatch victory, Saab appeared set to enjoy a dream debut for St George Illawarra.

With the Dragons trailing 14-2, Saab pounced on a 66th minute Gareth Widdop grubber to score his first NRL try and then helped level the scores eight minutes later when he crossed again after a Cameron McInnes charge down.

In doing so, Saab became the first Dragon to score two tries on debut since Alex McKinnon in 2011.

However, he was unable to field a short kick-off by Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynold after Widdop had landed a 78th minute penalty goal from the sideline to put St George Illawarra ahead 16-14 and Graham scored on the last tackle of the match.

“It’s definitely mixed emotions at the moment,” Saab said. “To score two tries, I couldn’t ask for anything more. Even scoring one try would have been special and doing it in the Red V means a lot more than most people would know.”

Saab scores on debut

Saab’s parents Pierre and Alysia are fanatical Souths supporters and his mother said after handing him his jersey that he had grown up wanting to play for the Rabbitohs but was now committed to St George Illawarra.

“I think mum started crying before she said a word at the jersey presentation,” Saab said. “That was pretty emotional and it almost got to me but I managed to stay composed.

“For dad, that was probably a win-win tonight but they are very proud. They were going to be proud whether we got a win, loss or draw.”

Since signing a four-year deal with the Dragons last season, Saab has grown four centimetres to 199cm and put on five kilos.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor, who phoned him last Saturday after the 40-14 loss to Penrith the night before to tell Saab he would be debuting against “dad’s team”, predicted he would eventually be the biggest winger in the game.

Match Highlights: Rabbitohs v Dragons

“He is a good kid, he is very respectful and works hard at training,” McGregor said.

“He has earned the right to play through his efforts in the lower grades. He has been consistent there and is an exciting young kid with a bright future.

“Over time he is going to fill out and he is going to end up being a 110kg, six-foot-five winger so he is going to be good.”

It was a sign of McGregor’s faith in Saab that he moved him from the right wing to the left side for the kick off after Widdop’s penalty goal

“We put our best catcher out there and he got nice and high but he just didn’t come down with the footy,” McGregor said.

Jason Saab
"That's a bit of a kick in the teeth that result when we worked so hard to get into a position to be in front with a minute to go.

"We received that one penalty to put us in front and that was the only one we got from the 16th minute so we had nothing except what we worked for.

“We had to do a lot more work than the opposition. They had nine more sets than us and we had to make 100-plus more tackles.

"We spoke during the week about our effort and our commitment to one another, that was certainly there but our execution needs to be a bit cleaner and our confidence is a bit down.”

I'd say Saab played well scoring two tries and generally good in defence except for that important last few seconds of the game. It is very hard to shine being placed outside of Aitken; especially when defending.

If he likes the right wing, I hope Mary keeps him there for the rest of the season. That is one spot that we won't have to recruit for. I also think that it would be worthwhile selecting Ravalawa and Norman as our centres. Lomax can fill the fullback position, Pearson on the left wing. That back 5 would be a great improvement on what we had last game.

Looked like he was tackled in the air. Should have been a penalty.
Yes most times in a game and players dont do that short kick off.. But no penalties in the frenzy of a tight last few minutes close finish or golden point. It would ruin the spectacle and TV cant have that

That final try wasn’t the kids fault. Our push on the slide defence wasn’t urgent enough or aggressive. If the edge had of gone hard at Cody Walker instead of sitting back and giving him space, it could have been shut down.
Lazy efforts from some of our key players.
Not Jason Saab’s fault. He was left on his own.
Very good observation. We just don't have any confidence to do anything

Looked like Souths sent out several blockers that had no intention of catching the ball, their intention was to stop the Dragons having a play it. Saab still had a play but was forced to leap over them clipping his legs and landing awkwardly. Should have been a penalty.

Uncle nick would be forgiven for confusing him for Daniel tupou lol the similarities are like wow lol

Can see the Tupou resemblance but for mine the kid is a Black Tommy Turbo- yes he's a lighter frame at this stage but take the colour out of it and his face and movement are uncannily like Tommy. He was safe as houses last night and Souths had to resort to illegal blocking and taking him out of the kick off after Widdop's goal. There was a forward pass to Graham as well so Souths got away with two referee howlers in virtually the one move.

He's still growing- just imagine a 2M tall, fast full-back who has a great vertical leap and can break tackles like Tommy. Not this excited about a potential full- back since Changa arrived in 1962
