I just started listening to them and f**k that would've been good to go to.

How different are they, compared to other metal groups?

Well they are about a thousand times more popular, as shown by the thousands of people at the show last night, that you'll probably never ever see at another metal show. They're a really good band though, a bit of doom in there and proggy. Their last album was a dissapointment though.

I really enjoyed the show last night. I liked the venue despite the location. Sound was pretty good, the place was HUGE. I also had a nice vantage point not being bumped by the idiot 14 year olds who seemed to think it was a punk or nu-metal gig bouncing around. Was happy to hear 'Under the Weeping Moon' also, one of my faves. Set list probably wasnt't as good as the last time they were hear, but I can't complain about that. I'll be seeing them again in 2 months at Wacken though :)

Wacken? You lucky, lucky bastard!
Im seeing them on Saturday night in Auckland, last three albums have been well...dull, uninspiring & boring.
Still looking forward to this show even if the majority of the set will be off the latest album.
What was the playlist?

Syd setlist:

Ghost of Perdition
White Cluster
The Amen Corner
The Baying Of The Hounds
Closure
Under The Weeping Moon
The Grand Conjuration
The Leper Affinity
------------------
Soldier of Fortune (Deep Purple Cover)
Deliverance

So 3 songs off the new one. The crowd seemed to enjoy them though, like a lot of them had only heard the new album.

It was a bizarre setlist and I was disappointed nothing was played off Morningrise.

Tiger Pride, I had to piss myself when I read your previous rant. I was thinking the exact same thing. Had some kid in front of me with a Korn backpack on - was considering having a go at him.

Hopefully the Cryptopsy show at the Gaelic will be free of nu-metal untermenschen.... although the last show I went to there (Nile) was pretty much a poser-free zone.

I think Cryptopsy will be clear. Although, they're relatively popular for a DM band. I imagine it will be a bit like the Disgorge gig a month or so back. But why the hell are Opeth so popular with the kids? I mean they are a good band but you wouldn't hear too much on the radio (granted JJJ played some Ghost Reveries tracks during the day this year) and I've never seen one of their clips on tv. All a bit mystefying. You could have sworn it was the Korn gig.

That sait it would be funny seeing no-metal kids trying to "get" Cryptopsy, given that even a fair few true DM fans still find them over-chaotic.

Had a f**king awesome time on Saturday night in Auckland. Shouldve played the drapery falls. Other than that it was the f**king best night of my life!!(Well, I was feeling good until I watched The Warriors game yesterday :( ) I got axe's drumstick which was sweet. Closure was a highlight (the 12 string used on Closure sounded sublime!)and the encore.
Crowd was abit of a odd mix of nu-metal fans, smelly westies & plenty of death metal munters in the crowd. For some reason there was a sh*tload of ginga people on the sidewalks after the show.
Setlist:

Ghost of Perdition
White Cluster
Amen Corner
Baying of the Hounds
Closure
Under the Weeping Moon
The Grand Conjuration
The Leper Affinity

Encore:
Deliverance
Demon of the Fall

They have some brilliant stuff, but my music taste have evolved so i don't listen to them much anymore. Blackwater Park is there best IMO.

These bands are very similar in sound..

Between the Buried and Me - Colours

Cynic - Traced in Air

I, unlike most Opeth fans, favour Still Life as their best. It is the most complete album that does not have a weak point. The music is beautiful, eerie, and aggressive. The lyrics are exactly a modern form of poetry telling a story. I feel that Blackwater Park misses out at the end - not saying there isn't awesome stuff on that album (QUITE THE OPPOSITE!)

That's what's great about music - its subjectivity.

I, personally, love "Damnation". "Death Whispered A Lullaby" is a brilliant, brilliant song.
