Too many soft tries all round. John’s “shelling peas“ comment was pretty well on the mark. Some of the defence seen last night and in game 1 just echoed some of the poor defence reads seen on the later part of NRL season.

Some fans like it and says it opens up with lots of tries; fair enough! Personally, find easy and soft tries boring and get disengaged from the game. Much preferred Origin games of earlier times when a try was more hard earned.

No he wasn’t but losing a half when you have a million dollar one sitting on the bench should be no problem at all.
Yeah can’t argue with you. Defensively a fit centre and not a 2nd rower with a gammy hamstring playing centre may have helped but overall he had a stinker

Kicked to the kerb for the past two weeks – with no less than Eighth Immortal Andrew Johns calling for him to be punted from the side – Nathan Cleary has booted the Blues to victory, a Suncorp decider and his finest hour yet on the game's biggest stage.

Cleary came into game two branded a 'flop' by northern media, the donuts in his tries, try assist, line break and line-break assist columns from six Origin outings cited as just cause.

By full-time NSW had a 34-10 triumph and Cleary man-of-the-match honours.

The Panthers playmaker didn't fill his boots in those standout stats, instead keeping a lethal right boot on the Queenslanders' throat throughout.

Getting ahead of the rushing defence that has brought him undone more than once in big games, Cleary kicked long and early in the tackle count repeatedly, finishing with two forced drop-outs, a 40/20 and 473 kicking metres.

Johns, having called for Cleary's axing after Origin I, paid his dues in commentary repeatedly throughout Cleary's return to form, the 36,212 on hand at ANZ Stadium doing likewise with every pinpoint punt.

"His kicking game tonight has been top notch," Johns said.

"A couple of big plays with early kicks which changed the momentum but he is standing up, demanding the ball and they're attacking to their right-hand side through Nathan.

"He has been super. Under all sorts of pressure and he's really stood up."

Coach Brad Fittler could only turn to a chuffed first-time skipper James Tedesco when asked if Cleary had silenced his doubters.

"What do you reckon?"

"Definitely."

Addo-Carr steps back inside to score from a scrum

"He was good," Fittler continued.

"His kicking was great. He made an error early where Munster caught it in goal and they scored off the back of that.

"Then he was faultless the rest of the game."

For Queensland, their task was all-but insurmountable from the second minute when Cameron Munster's head hit the ANZ Stadium turf heavily.

He did not return after undergoing his HIA due to his poor balance on the field after the incident, the Maroons reduced to 16 men as NSW's dominance on paper transferred to the paddock.

It took some time though.

Teen speedster Xavier Coates took flight and Queensland took first points through a sublime perpendicular touchdown, true to the Olympic track and field aspirations he held growing up in Papua New Guinea.

The Blues wore plenty before they got a true crack in Queensland territory.

It was Cleary splitting them open with a show and go for his first line break in the Origin arena.

His latest halves partner Cody Walker made the most of it and then some, dummying and spinning past Kurt Capewell as the Blues attacked his right edge for the first time, but definitely not the last.

No stranger to critics either, Walker's recall to the sky blue scrumbase was his first since an infamous night at Suncorp last year saw him benched before his debut game was over.

More than once comparisons were made between the Cleary-Walker combination and the latter's pairing with Adam Reynolds at Redfern.

Either way, Walker was a different man to the one that trudged off Suncorp 18 months ago.

"You can go back and he had a lot on his plate for his debut and he still had a big impact at the back end of the game," Fittler said.

"I think he's just grown up. He's a real leader Cody. He wasn't getting much luck. Patience.

"Adam takes a lot of the kicking. Cody just complimented Nathan, he had a couple of nice kicks again when they started to give too much attention to Nathan. They worked together really well."

Up 6-4, Cleary then pinned Phillip Sami in his in-goal, earning a try assist a minute later for his troubles.

But the four-pointer was all James Tedesco's.

A rather large left-foot step from the new Blues skipper split Ben Hunt and Felise Kaufusi after the latter stuck in his line to shoulder Cleary as he shovelled the ball to his No.1.

The Blues lost Tyson Frizell to a head cut but Queensland simply kept losing possession in return, only desperate defence on Coates' edge denying two last tackle raids through Daniel Tupou.

Another forced drop-out from Cleary – this time putting boot to ball on the second tackle – required a gutsy goal line shot from Gagai to keep Tedesco at bay.

When Coates was finally found wanting under the high ball – again courtesy of Cleary's right boot – Josh Addo-Carr was stepping, then strolling over from the resulting scrum for an 18-4 lead.

Until the Storm speedster's try there were shades of Adelaide in the Blues' advantage, a mountain of possession and field position had not stacked up on the scoreboard.

Jack Wighton ensured straight after the break that there would be no more Queensland heroics, surging past Gagai to flip the script on their one-on-one duel from last week.

Another scrum at close range saw NSW exploit the Maroons' backline defence once more, Daniel Tupou this time on the end of a slick Blues move.

Sandwiched between Tupou's try and a consolation prize for Josh Papalii, a couple of sin-binnings from yesteryear for two enforcers of the future.

Payne Haas and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui traded punches as their teammates piled in at the 56th minute, Haas's sky blue shredded in the scuffle before both were sent on their way.

Another four-pointer for Addo-Carr and NSW were too.

Steering them all the way to a live Origin III rubber, and a crack at three straight series wins on Queensland turf, Nathan Cleary and his right boot.

Hunt preparing for Maroons halves return
  • National Sport
    r0_0_800_600_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Ben Hunt is ready to start at halfback for Queensland if required in Origin III.
Ben Hunt admits he "should have been better" on Wednesday night but is now preparing to don the No.6 for Queensland in just his fifth game in the halves in five months.

Wednesday night's heavy loss to NSW has exacerbated pressure on the St George Illawarra halfback who could step in to replace Cameron Munster in Game III in Brisbane.

The Maroons utility has spent the 2020 NRL season fighting for his spot in the Dragons' halves but was shifted to the bench and dummy half as he battled to find form.

With a State of Origin series on the line at Suncorp Stadium, Hunt will spend the week training at five-eighth should Munster be ruled out with concussion.

"We'll assess how Munny is and have a look at that but I think I'll be preparing to play a bit of six as well as the other roles I've been playing," he said.

"This week's prep for me is going to be a big one."

It will be the first time in Queensland camp Hunt has trained in the halves despite wearing the No.14 jersey as a utility.

The 30-year-old was thrown in to cover Munster after just two minutes when he was ruled out of Wednesday night's game after a heavy knock.

Showing his trademark brutal honesty, Hunt admitted he wasn't up to scratch.

His left-edge combination with Felise Kaufusi looked confused in defence, missing seven tackles as NSW ran tree tries around them.

Hunt said the shock of Munster's injury and his lack of preparation in the halves contributed to the performance.

"It's a really different role but it's one that I've played a lot of in the past and through my career so I should have been better than I was tonight I think," he said.

"There's no excuses for that but at the same time I wasn't really preparing to play there.

"It was a bit of a shock, it's obviously not ideal losing one of your star halves in a game but I was put in there to do a job and I was a bit off the pace.

"I wasn't really expecting to go in there and I was preparing for something else. I'll be looking at next week and prepare to be anywhere."

Papenhuyzen, McInnes in frame as Blues look for bench versatility

Blues coach Brad Fittler says the early head knock to Maroons star Cameron Munster was a reminder of the value of having a play-making option on the bench, after Queensland utility Ben Hunt was forced to play 78 minutes in the halves in Origin II.

As well as the Blues played to level the series, they also had their share of luck, dodging any serious injury woes after heading into the game with a four-forward bench.

With revelations after the game that hooker Damien Cook spent Monday night in hospital and had to head straight from there to Tuesday's captains' run with Cam McInnes on standby, Fittler will look closely at the Dragons captain or fit-again Storm flyer Ryan Papenhuyzen for a bench role for the series decider.

"There's a few boys there [waiting for a chance] and looking at what happened in the game last night, not just to us but to them, looking at concussions, Munster got concussed," Fittler mused at the team recovery session on Thursday.

"The beauty of someone like Ben Hunt who can play halves or hooker – you don't want to anticipate someone getting hurt but you need to be able to cover everyone.

"I thought Browny [Nathan Brown] did a good job, we only threw him in for a couple of minutes at the end but his first stint was awesome. It's a headache."

Fittler was referring to Eels lock Nathan Brown, who spent the final couple of plays of the match bending his back at dummy half after Cook was given a three-minute early mark to follow on from a potent 15-minute stint as a middle forward midway through the second half.

While Brown has done a little dummy-half work, he is hardly an ideal option if Cook is injured early in game three. Versatile Eels skipper Clint Gutherson could cover several positions while interchange forward Isaah Yeo could cover centre in the event of an injury.

But the chance of a game-deciding HIA early on in the winner-takes-all clash has provided food for thought, and Papenhuyzen – who made his way into first grade as an attacking spark off the bench for the Storm in 2019 – could find himself vying with McInnes to replace Brown next Wednesday.

A third option could be to start Stephen Crichton or Zac Lomax in the centres and use Gutherson as the utility.

"I saw him train today," Fittler said of the Storm No.1. "Papi is fit."

With 21-man squads required by Friday afternoon, Fittler said he would consult his coaching staff to decide whether any cover or changes are required.

"I don't know. I don't want to out-think myself. I'll sit down with the staff and have a chat," he added.

Fittler will be reluctant to make too many changes after such a dominant performance, with all four bench forwards adding plenty of impact in a marked improvement from game one.

"Your interchange normally always works when you're in front and leading by a couple of tries," Fittler added.

"I might have to go back and look at the first game as well, just to work better on fatigue. Once we absorbed that first bit of pressure we seemed to control a lot of the game."

Fittler may bring Raiders winger Nick Cotric into the 21 as cover for Addo-Carr, who picked up a toe injury early in game two before producing yet another starring performance with two more tries and some huge defensive plays and kick-chases.

"It's all good but, just a jarred toe," Addo-Carr said.

remote.axd

"I ran the ball and one of the Queensland boys landed on my foot, landed on the back of it and put pressure on my big toe.

"I didn't really feel it until the back end of the first half, it just started getting really stiff and sore and I couldn't run on it properly.

"The doctors and physios said I should be right, bit of swelling, I've just got to ice it."

The Maroons have turned to rookie hooker Harry Grant to spark them from the bench in the series decider in Brisbane while also calling up another debutant in Corey Allan to fix their winger woes.

Cameron Munster has been named at five-eighth but is still yet to be officially cleared as he is in the midst of completing the concussion protocols following his head knock early in the Origin II loss to NSW.

Grant, who was one of the NRL’s breakout stars this year while on loan from the Storm to the Tigers, will line up as Queensland’s bench utility, replacing Ben Hunt, who has been relegated to the reserves.

Allan has been named on the wing in place of Phillip Sami, who has been dropped from the 21-man squad.

Christian Welch returns at prop after missing the 34-10 loss in Sydney after he was concussed in Queensland's 18-14 victory in Adelaide, with Dunamis Lui reverting to the bench.

Edrick Lee, Moeaki Fotuaika and Brenko Lee join Hunt on the reserves list.

Brenko Lee is hoping to have recovered from a calf strain by Wednesday and if fit, he could come into the centres with Dane Gagai shifting to the wing and Allan dropping out.

Munster, who trained on a bike at Queensland’s training run on Friday, will have to pass concussion protocols during the week after leaving the field in the third minute at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

Coach Wayne Bennett is confident he will recover to take his place in the side and Maroons fullback Valentine Holmes said Munster was making good progress in his quest to be fit for the showdown at Suncorp Stadium.

"After the game he was a bit quiet and annoyed he couldn’t play out there but today he has been fine … the normal Munster, chatty and lippy," Holmes said.

"He seems right. He’s got to do the usual protocols. The doctors and staff will do a great job to try and get him back.

"He has played in grand finals, Origins, big games, so he is someone we definitely need to have. He is an experienced player in our team and in the leadership team. We need him on the field."

Munster was sorely missed in Sydney with Hunt playing the majority of the game at five-eighth with mixed results.

His absence also had an impact on Holmes who said he was relishing the prospect of the Melbourne playmaker's return.

"It didn’t help losing Munster, I did a lot of work with him to bring me into the game," Holmes said.

"His confidence and what he brings to the team gets us going.

"Ben Hunt did a great job filling in but we prepared all week for Munster and Cherry-Evans to be in the halves and Hunt to come in as a lock, roving player.

"It through a spanner in the works a bit, but it’s a professional sport and we need to be prepared for that."

Hunt, speaking before the team for the decider was named, said coach Wayne Bennett had encouraged the players to look forward and not back at the poor display in Sydney.

"He touched on having a think about what you did in this game and then leaving it behind. He really wants us to move on pretty quick," Hunt said.

"He said he knows that we're a better team than what we offered there and we need to leave that one behind us and be better in Brisbane.

"We need to prepare harder this week and we'll be right to go."

Blues 'shattered' but in awe of Apps, Kelly
Author
Troy Whittaker NRL.com Reporter
Timestamp
Fri 13 Nov 2020, 11:19 PM

NSW were "shattered" after falling short of an epic State of Origin comeback against Queensland, but coach Andy Patmore lauded the "amazing" feats of a few players.

Patmore lamented the fact his team didn't attack the edges more often in the 24-18 loss at Sunshine Coast Stadium given they scored three tries in the final 11 minutes after starting to "play some footy".

But while the Blues couldn't retain the Harvey Norman Women's Origin shield for the third consecutive year, they'll be able to draw inspiration from the efforts of captain Kezie Apps, Isabelle Kelly and Kylie Hilder well into the future.

Apps and Kelly suffered knee and ankle injuries respectively in round two of Dragons' NRLW campaign in October and Patmore said the star duo "couldn't walk two weeks ago".

Second-rower Apps scored a try and made a game-high 36 tackles and centre Kelly recorded 114 run metres.

Apps gets the bounce from a Howard kick

"They were both in braces coming into camp," Patmore said.

"What they've done and the commitment they've made with the medical staff … they both played 70 minutes tonight and a quality 70 minutes.

"We had our talks and they were specially mentioned by all the girls; a huge round of applause and thank-you for those two. Kezie Apps is a great credit to the game, the way she spoke post-game – she's hurting big-time [but] she's just a class act.

"And Isabelle Kelly's the same. These girls are great role models for all the kids that are playing. They're exceptional athletes, men or women, so they should be held in that esteem."

Hilder, 44, retired from Origin after last year's win and was set to be the trainer this time around until Keeley Davis withdrew due to a back injury. She stepped in to start at hooker and got through a quality 57 minutes.

"She only got brought into the team three days ago," Patmore said.

"Super fit, as you can see. She could play, I say, until 50. But she's an incredibly fit person, knows her footy, is a great leader amongst our group and she's been great for the group all week, bringing those young girls in and really being a mentor to them.

"And she'll be on our coaching staff forever. She's cemented her spot, does a lot of community work with girls' footy and I hope one day soon she's sitting in my chair.

"I said to her I don't have a lot of regrets, but last year I had a regret because I didn't play her long enough. She spent a bit of time on the bench and she deserved to play more footy.

"And then the bizarre world of footy, I get to play her again this year and give her a big opportunity to play long minutes. She's happy as in there having played but obviously hugely disappointed."

Patmore sat down at his media conference and expressed his reluctance to discuss the omission of halves Kirra Dibb and Maddie Studdon having been asked about it ad nauseum before the clash.

But he stood firm in his decision to pick players "based off form" and said halfback Melanie Howard and five-eighth Corban McGregor handled themselves well.

"We had our Sydney-based comp, the Harvey Norman, and also the NRW – the girls that are playing the best deserve to be picked," he said.

"The two tonight – Corbs's defence was outstanding. Mel had some great runs and some great touches of the footy. We just didn't do it enough and we didn't get to the edges enough."

Patmore described debutante forward Filomina Hanisi, who was terrific off the bench as she made the leap from playing under-18s Origin last year, as a future "superstar".

Griffin take note, it will not be an easy expertise getting both Hunt and Norman to fire in 2021. The Great Bennett has given up on Hunt again and the Queensland selected gave Norman a wide birth for the whole series. SOO level pay without SOO selection. Got to get it while you can.

Apps, Bent make Jillaroos merit team
Author
Troy Whittaker NRL.com Reporter

Brad Donald says the 17 players named in the Flight Centre Jillaroos Merit Squad have put themselves firmly in contention for national spots ahead of the 2021 World Cup in England.

The coach and his fellow Jillaroos selectors chose the merit team based on form throughout the NRLW premiership and Friday night's State of Origin clash.

Stars including Jess Sergis, Isabelle Kelly (who was injured in the second round of NRLW), Corban McGregor and Tiana Penitani missed selection after underwhelming campaigns by their lofty standards, but Donald said he knows they can offer much more.

"It was tough [to select the merit side] … It's not necessarily the team that we would take if we played a game tomorrow," Donald told NRL.com.

"[But] it's a World Cup year next year and that means taking away 23 players. If we were going away, those 17 would all get a start, they'd all be on the plane. I think they've all worked hard enough."

jillaroos_20201114.jpg

Dally M Player of the Year Ali Brigginshaw is named at halfback with her Broncos teammates and Queensland match-winners Tarryn Aiken (five-eighth) and Tamika Upton (fullback) also included.

"That's a really strong combination and that could be the potential future of the Jillaroos. Neither Tarryn or Tamika have represented the Jillaroos, so their form was great. They've stepped up every time," Donald said.

Brigginshaw finished the season as a ball-playing lock at club and state level, but Donald said the Jillaroos prefer a traditional playmaking style and the selectors couldn't overlook Roosters gun Hannah Southwell as their No.13.

Two players – Evania Pelite, the rugby sevens convert who played for the Warriors, and breakout Roosters forward Kennedy Cherrington – were chosen despite not playing Origin.

Donald highlighted Lauren Brown and Quincy Dodd as players who improved immensely to put their names up in lights this season.

"Lauren Brown had a breakout season in rugby league with Burleigh, the Broncos and now with Queensland," he said.

"I saw her run around at Burleigh a couple of times in the halves and thought she was pretty good.

"Quincy Dodd – I think she's probably the form hooker. We've had her in the system for a couple of years but she hasn't quite been able to crack a spot.

"She was probably the most consistent hooker through the NRLW and even when she came on [for NSW] last night she made a bit of a difference."

The merit forward pack boasts plenty of firepower with Millie Boyle and Filomina Hanisi up front and experienced campaigner Kezie Apps and Tallisha Harden joining Southwell in the back row.

Boyle's Broncos teammate Chelsea Lenarduzzi forced her way onto the bench having also gained merit selection in 2019.

"Millie's been solid the last two years. She was really solid through the NRLW season. Herself and Chelsea Lenarduzzi were great for the Broncos and they were both great last night as well," Donald said.

"Filomina, she's another one that probably was a bit of a surprise. She's had a breakout season as well. We're just rewarding some of the good form – one of the things that we make sure we do in the Jillaroos side is reward people for their form and effort.

"The back-rowers – Tallisha Harden had a great season and she was great again last night just continually digging into the line. And Kezie tried her guts out which is pretty standard from Kezie in any team."

Roosters and Queensland playmaker Zahara Temara and Dragons and NSW forward Shaylee Bent earned interchange places.

Elsewhere, Julia Robinson claimed a centre position and fellow Queenslander Karina Brown landed on the wing.

No worries Orangeman, break out the tambourine and celebrate the result as hard as you want to. Zero f**ks given about this series to be honest. Bring on 2021 and the big red V

I’m getting the feeling there are many f**ks being given or you wouldn’t be trying to rain on a winning parade..

Sing with me..

Aye yai yippie, aye yai yippie, aye yai yippie yippie yai!

How good is it that the only side with a dragons player won the shield..

A win for all of us..
