People suggesting a 9s or similar while SOO is on. Will clubs like their players playing in a mickey mouse type event and potentially getting injured when the focus is to win the premiership? Imagine Tedesco or Moses don't get selected for SOO or a key player not eligible for SOO, they play in the 9s and get injured. Maybe I am wrong, but I can already see the uproar from clubs and fans impacted if they lose a key player this way. I get you can also get injured playing g SOO but that is rep football which we need. Also, with players asked to play 9s, will they be paid extra given the extra games? Does it go in the cap? Will clubs rort it by paying a player extra under the guise that they are playing 9s but conveniently that player is injured and can't play and they replace them with a nobody?

I’m sure in the 90’s, origin had a fortnight break between games, now it extends for 8 weeks

In 1990, Origin 1 was on 9 May 1990, Origin 2 on 30 May 1990, Origin 3 on 13 June 1990. Game 2 was in Melbourne at (then) Olympic Park. All matches were on a Wednesday.

In 1994, Origin 1 was on 23 May 1994, Origin 2 on 8 June 1994, Origin 3 on 20 June 1994. Origin 2 was at the MCG. Game 1 was played on a Monday. Game 2 was played on a Wednesday. Game 3 was played on a Monday.

In 1998, Origin 1 was on 22 May 1998, Origin 2 on 5 June 1998, Origin 3 on 19 June 1998. Note all 3 matches were played on a Friday.

In 1999, Origin 1 was on 26 May 1999, Origin 2 on 9 June 1999, Origin 3 on 23 June 1999. All the matches were back played on a Wednesday.

For those who don't rem, ember, 2018 was the last time any Origin matches were played on a stand alone weekend.

Also in 2001, all three games in that series were played on a Monday night.

Great point about the rep window in premier league

If the worlds biggest sporting can do it then so can the nrl
Some people mistakenly believe broadcasters will all of a sudden lose interest if the NRL decides to have standalone Origin for the next broadcast deal. Couldn't be further from the truth.

It's time to stop letting the broadcasters dictate when Origin is played and do what's best for the players, clubs, and fans.

Internationals aren't comparable
Great point about the rep window in premier league

If the worlds biggest sporting can do it then so can the nrl

Firstly, football clubs are forced too. The set up in world football is a lot different to the NRL.

Also, most international games are friendlies. Not actual world cup qualifiers or international tournaments, glorified trials is what they are.

Also many Eurpoean leagues , bar those in the UK, actually suspend their competitions for a few week around Christmas to allow for the inclemnt weather. That gives their players time to recuperate mid-season.

The other thing is most football sides have bigger first team squads than an NRL club does. They only need 11 starters and 5 subs, 16 players and often most have a squad of around 35, and may have a l;ot more who are in the lower grades but are unregistered for the firsty division league. Hence they can rotate their players to avoid fatigue more than NRL clubs can.

Finally, if you think football, or the NBA, compare with the physical wear and tear of playing rugby league, then you are dead wrong on that score.

Its been tried already. With no comp games they moved the games to play them on weekends (iirc). Nine killed it off after that season.

The stars would probably sit it out but they could make it a big purse for the winner of the tournament and maybe allow the winnings to be split up between the players who do play.

Prize money is obviously an option and maybe the big stars not playing SOO wouldn't play. Problem I see however is the game is brutal enough without adding extra games to the season. The players from teams who don't get any prize money would want to get paid for the extra games and mostly likely the RLPA would insist on payment. Does this fall within the cap? How much extra do you pay these players? Can it be rorted so monies actually go to players that don't actually play?

Anyway, better minds than me might come up with a solution to minimise the disruption that SOO causes to the season.

You could do it like that.

Standalone should be the aim. Its the fairest option in the end. The sticking point will keep being season length. When you slap on international football as well it's very difficult.

20 teams 20 rounds with 3 for Origin. Sits fine with me. 10 weeks straight with the Origin sandwich. The 10th game of the first half of the season would suddenly be a huge round of football. You'd have everyone busting it because you are either playing Origin or getting a few weeks off.
Under the current schedule we lose 1 week already with the byes. It's only 2 weeks and with the expansion adding games each week there's already talk of reducing the rounds.
20 team comp- everyone plays each other once which is fairest, then there's more room for internationals as well.

As some others have pitched I'd love to see a three week representative period. It seems to be the best of both worlds as the fans of international rugby league feel like there should be more games played throughout the year and it'd fix teams being disadvantaged by Origin.

For example if this weekend we had something like this all in Sydney how much more exciting would it be?

Thursday - Cook Islands Vs Lebanon

Friday - Fiji Vs Samoa, Australia Prime Ministers XIII (Featuring the best players not picked for Origin) Vs Papua New Guinea

Saturday - U19 Origin followed by Women's Origin followed by Men's Origin.

Sunday: New Zealand Vs Tonga

---

These games don't just need to be international friendlies, you could have tournaments or World Cup qualifiers during this time and it'd be a great attraction for NRL fans as not only do you have the incentive of going to Origin but you also have all these big star players playing in the supporting games.

From a business standpoint it's more games to sell to local government and TV networks, the fans are happy and the players get to keep busy and represent something aside from their club during this time period also.

Just reduce the NRL season by a couple of games. It is too long a season anyway.

For me SOO gives me another team to cheer on when the regular season starts to feel a bit meh and invigorates my passion for rugby league.
Without SOO June and July would feel empty after already having it for so long.
Yes it sux for clubs that get over represented in it because it can derail the season with injuries and fatigue, but it shows the strength of those clubs.
I get that club games are meh during SOO, but that's up to the NRL and the clubs to do better during that period.

If an optimal solution to the disruption SOO causes can be found then great. Otherwise I would not be complaining if my club had 3 or 4 or even 5 SOO players as it would generally mean my team is strong and a threat of winning the comp and in all likelihood these rep players would also attract other good players to come to the club and make it even stronger. Sure beats the alternative of having 1 or no SOO players and knowing you are next to no chance of winning the comp or even making the semis.

Effectively forcing players to choose between NSW/Qld or Tonga/Samoa would only do damage to the international game.
