Do NFL teams contest special teams plays?

Yes, they do.


But the calibre of athlete at NFL level - not to mention the complexity of the playbooks - is much higher than at college level, and so success rates are much lower.

A few seasons ago, the Dolphins kept running flea flicker plays almost exclusively - not special teams, but it does demonstrate that teams think outside the box from time to time.

I think coaches in the NFL are more risk-averse, given how cut-throat the coaching environment in the NFL is, and so they will tend to favour plays that are statistically likely to work, over plays that have a chance to fail.

I have noticed that this year & probably last year as well actually.

Teams are more prepared to go for it on 4th & short then probably what we saw 5-10 years ago when it felt like the play calling was a lot more conservative.

Absolutely.

Going for it on 4th down can mean the difference between a match-winning field goal drive, or relying on your defence to win you the game.

It's a good trend - at least, for us fans.

It's way more exciting.

It's also worth noting that more teams are using their punters in more creative ways, which is cool.

I’d say they go for it on 4th more in college although I don’t watch hardly any NFL so difficult for me to say.
They go for it a lot at college level.

Of course they do. It’s just not easy to get a result in the pros.

Chiefs won a game earlier this year by blocking a field goal. Niners did the same a few years ago against the Packers. It’s f**king hard to block a field goal.

Blocking punts happens more often because it’s a bit easier, but still hard to do.

Do they use their big time players though or put the second rate guys out there for ST plays?.
My college team (the fighting Irish) make a lot of ST plays because they use the key players in those roles rather than back ups. Other colleges use back ups and so can’t make the plays as regularly.

Not really; teams don't want their star players getting injured on special teams.

However, some teams do it - the Eagles used DeSean Jackson as their punt and kick returned, and even the Raiders used Josh Jacobs for a little while.

But usually, teams will use specialist players in special teams at NFL level.

Miami needed a miracle and its not going to happen.

I blame our team more then Chiefs resting all there guns for a pointless game.

The shithouse start to the year where we played like dogshit was always going to bite them on there arse.

And tbh they weren't good enough anyway they had a couple of games in the backend they lost to Packers & Texans who are playoff quality while picking up wins against the garbage of the competition.

Anyway on the chiefs they dont play for another 2 weeks after this. So that will be 3 weeks post there last game for there first playoff game.

I almost think that could be too long a turnaround between games for a crunch knockout game. When other teams could be getting some momentum.
