Manly's Brett Stewart to undergo knee surgery, sidelined for five months

By staff reporters
foxsports.com.au
March 17, 2010 Manly fullback Brett Stewart is to undergo surgery on his left knee, and he is expected to be on the sidelines for five months.
Stewart sustained the injury in making a try-saving tackle on Wests Tigers winger Lote Tuqiri late in the Monday Night Football match at Sydney Football Stadium.

“It a shattering blow to Brett personally and us as a club but we have to be positive and he is being positive despite his recent run of bad luck," Manly coach Des Hasler said.

"We proved we can win matches without him last season, and we can do it again.

"It’s not the end of the world by any means but it would be ridiculous not to suggest he won’t be missed. He is a champion player."

The injury is identical to that he sustained on his right knee last season. That injury sidelined him from round five until round 25.

"He has set himself round 20 (as a reurn date) and it is good he is setting himself goals," Sea Eagle chief executive Graham Lowe said.

"The Manly club knows how much of a fighter Brett is, and he will be given the best of medical and rehabilitation support to get himself back where he belongs as soon as possible.

“He has been through it before and knows what to expect."

I hate Manly as much as the next bloke but definitely feel sorry for Stewart. 2 injuries like that virtually back to back has got to be hard to swallow....even more so i guess first game into the season.

It could be the last thing on his mind considering all things. I find it hard to be sorry for any Manly player.

The kid Stewart can play though.
BTW - Irrespective of what you may think about them, Greg Bird had the charges against him dismissed. Wicks and Houston and Stewart have their day in court. Presumption of innocence is still part of the Australian Legal system. Or is it?

I think you will find pete that the reference is to the fact that unlike Bird, Houston and Wicks who all faced or are facing similarly damaging charges to what Stewart is facing, he still has a paying job regardless of his guilt or innocence....... call it a double standard if you will.

Fair enough 'spose. The Sharks hunted Bird, the Knights Wicks and Houston..Stewart has been treated like a star right along the line. But he has his day of court coming up. Should be interesting to see how it pans out.

Presumption of innocence actually isn't a part of our legal system. Law is a science. He isn't anything until the court finds him guilty or innocent, because the court is impartial to both sides (or meant to be). In a criminal case, he has to be proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt. The reason for the beyond reasonable doubt is that the prosecution is viewed as having virtually limitless resources and ability to gather evidence and the chance of miscarriage of justice is greater.

Bird didn't have the charges dismissed, they were quashed because the key witness wouldn't testify against Bird. He could still be charged later if further evidence arises.

It'd be interesting to be called up for jury duty just to see if either prosecution or defence challenge jury member selection.
