Guys, just off topic for a minute if I may.

I'm looking to get myself into a covers band and need to get my repertoire of songs sorted so just wondering if you could give me some ideas of what songs you like to hear when you go to a pub and there's a covers band playing.

Idealy I'd like stuff from 60's/70's till now.

Thanks guys.

DJL

the set may be a little predictable - and very heavy

loose the stones stuff

get more lighter / jazz stuff

and try to get spacey riff/funk tunes like dragon attack by queen

As much as I hate to say it I have to agree. Dont get me wrong as far as Im concerned the louder and dirtier the better but .....Not all the punters will enjoy bleeding ears.
Its funny how different pubs/clubs draw different crowd responses to songs.
We try to mix it up a bit while still being rock"n" roll.
You have to play songs that people know if your gonna do covers. Mostly.
Girls like to dance , sorry let me rephrase that ...Girls love to dance. So find a few songs that girls will dance to. e.g Steal My Kisses.. gets them everytime. Drunk men love to watch girls dance . You could put an ambulance siren to a drum beat and if the girls dance the blokes will think its the greatest thing they've ever heard.
That is because we are dirty animals.
Once you've got them dancing then the hard bit starts and thats keeping them there. So , save all your sure things until the end of the night when everyone is well oiled..in other words dont have premature erockulation.
Acouple of slower songs maybe to start a new set is always a good idea to get their attention.
We've had 'em hanging off the rafters to back in black one night then then had 'em running for cover to the same song one night later.
Do what I do ...close your eye's and go for it.

Every cover band has to play Mustang Sally - especially if you want a gig at an RSL

Get some Van Morrison in there DJL. Stuff like...

Bright Side of the Road
Brown Eyed Girl (well, it's kinda compulsory I guess, but not his best!)
Jackie Wilson Said
Moondance
Cleanin' Windows

And even some Elvis Costello - OK, he's complicated, but Olivers Army and Veronica are timeless! Even 'She', off the Notting Hill soundtrack - Good for bringing the mood in close for a bit.

Or what about some soul stuff, Jimmy Barnes style?

River Deep, Mountain High
Ain't no mountain high enough
Higher and Higher

It's all good. Throws the punters off a bit when they hear something they may not have expected, but that they like.

Oh, and chuck a Beatles number or two in. Helter Skelter or something from that era. Something that not everyone will be familiar with.

Steer clear of Love Shack whatever you do

We should get our own Forum cover band going.
SS you would be the singer of course ..on account of all that merk.
Don and myself would look after the the guitar stuff.
El Garbo would take car of the Bass duties going by his Darkness avatar.
We need a drummer and maybe keys ( not essential though - as it is an intrument designed for hair dressers)
And Sully yep you guessed it you will play with the sax. :D
We'll need some back up singers as well.
now what songs will we do?
What about a bit of ....twisted sister - where not gonna take it to warm up the crowd.
Oh by the way ...we would be perfoming on top of the ET stand on Sat night home games prior to kick off and as part of the half time entertainment.

Good Topic :D

I try and steer clear of the pub cover seen, and usually just do things like weddings and corporate functions, so im not exactly sure what the pub gig setlist demands these days...

We usually keep our setlist pretty dancey, for no other reason than to keep the chicks happy ;-)

I'll give you a sample of the setlist we're doing for a wedding on the 21st. Its actually on my other computer, but i'll try and remember some of them. The chick who's getting married gave us good guide to what they wanted, which is always helpful.

In no particular order

Cosmic girl - Jamiroquai
Moondance - Van Morrison
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Isnt She Lovely - Stevie """
Shake your tail feather - Ray Charles (blues brothers) *shoots self in head*
Twist and shout - beatles *shoots self in head*
Bad Girls - Donna Summer
Miss You - Rolling stones
Love Foolosophy - Jamiraquai
Are you gonna go my way - Lenny Kravitz
A couple of Morcheeba songs that i cant remember *shoots self in head*
Dancing Queen - Abba *shoots self in head*
Dream on dreamer - The brand new heavies
My mumma said - Lenny Kravitz
Fly me to the moon - sinatra
Cant get enough - some housy ministry of sound song
Lady Marmalade - patti labelle
Sing it back - Moloko
On a night like this - kylie minogue
Lady - Mojo
Its in your eyes - kylie minogue
Horizons been defeated - Jack Johnson
Is this love - Marley
Finally - that early 90's shite dance song
Say a litle prayer for you - aretha
Canned heat - jamiroquai

Jeebuz .....i just realised how shite alot of those songs are. Luckily there's usually plenty of free beer to consume after a night of playing demoralizing music

The drummer from this band also plays in "pyjama party", and they do the pub seen, so i'll get their setlist off him and post it a little later on in the week when i see him next.

I'd like to see you have a crack at singing 'Dreams' by Van Halen without tearing your throat out. Either that, or take along a drill and do 'Poundcake'
