No mate, you were competing against young professional couples (double income no kids) who combined prolly earn twice or 3 or 4 or 5 yours.

Most are little Aussie battlers just like you.

Little to do with down hill skiers spending grandpa's cash. They work just as hard as you or harder. I will tell you this, there are a lot of late twenties graduates who might earn six figures starting with 2, but they don’t dare leave the office before the partners do until like 8pm. There is a toxic culture in the big towers of the CBD and often whispered about.

How much do you think an electrician who works forself would make?
Here's a clue. Most trades make more then working professionals these days.
If I do a job out your way I also get to charge double what I'd normally charge and since I've moved into inner west I am in striking distance

Congratulations mate. But what you say is irrelevant to what I was talking about. You were implying that you were the struggling little aussie battler, swimming against the tide of those trust babies who don't know what life is about.

The reality check is that a) you're a single income vs a working couple in your area who also want to live in the inner west have two big incomes, and b) graduates out of uni just a few years earn what the best tradies earn.

So you shouldn't take offence. You should be proud on what you have achieved.

The trust baby thing ? Yeah it happens and the bank of mum n dad is a thing. But not as much as drunk Uncle Frank thinks it is.

What IS a 2024 thing is that empty nesters are (this totally randomly made up) downsizing in the Shire and buying in Bulli and giving the kids an early inheritance so they can get into the property market by buying a unit in Sutherland with a 30% deposit.

I was almost squeezed out of the Sydney property market. Here I am a guy who has worked since age 16 and for my self since I was 23 in a decent paying trade. Up at 5.30am.l most days. And quite wise with his money. I had to buy a run down shit box and spent 4yrs in spare time fixing it to make it liveable.
And you know who I was competing against mostly? 25yld kids who's parents where beneficiaries of inter generational wealth who haven't worked a hard day's work in their lives.
Only leaving their trendy little suburbs to go and watch the Swans play.
Whilst the parents are slowly buying more and more real estate for their entitled kids whilst slowly wiping out the middle class.

It's bullshit. It's probably why most kids have given up nowdays if they aren't born into money. There is nothing f**king left for then. I also work with a lot of immigrants. I feel sorry for the poor bustards. They are getting flogged like animals. Driving users after hours just to pay their rent. They'll never afford a home.

How is this fair?
I don’t come from intergenerational wealth (nor my wife) and while I don’t live in inner west, I am buying up more and more real estate for my kids, although I’m hoping I’m still well in control of that wealth by the time they’ve established their own lives. I’ve never started work before 7 though I have had the odd day which stretches into the next. (Let’s be honest too why do tradies start so early? You’re knocking off at 3 so it’s not like noise ordinance is a factor).

And while you’ve worked yourself into a decent position, can you honestly say starting work at 16 (and that may or may not have been a choice - and the bigger travesty is we are requiring teens to make that choice but make it incredibly difficult to reverse that choice) is setting yourself up with greater economical prospects than going through higher education?
