And in other news, Parramatta is enjoying the festival of Stan Jurd over the next few days and I caught up with this Brazilian DJ:

And she’s on the machine and trancing away.

There were all kinds of people enjoying the spiritually of the Upbeat and happy doompf.

When I retire, I think I might collect me some Katters and immigrate to Brazil

I don't think you got the gist of the video..

Taxibg the crap out of companies will only get you so much then dry up
It was actually a “super profits” tax. Did you actually know how it worked ? It was originally proposed by Rudd, but of course the mining lobby, backed by the LNP spelled out disastrous repercussions.

So she scalled it down and it only impacted companies that had profits over $75m.

You do know that companies like Santos and Chevron turnover billions and simply just don’t pay tax ? How is that good for our country ?

They do it because they have fancy accountants who manage to structure losses. They owe parent companies so much money that the interest payments eats into any profits they make. Debt loading.

You’ve heard about how Apple work ? Apple, based in Ireland (?) make the iphone for $20 in china and sell it to Apple AU for $1200, then Apple AU retail it for $1199. After they pay rent and wages, Apple AU make a loss. Bugger, can’t pay tax. Transfer pricing.

The “dry up” threat is smokes and mirrors. Overnight BHP just settled the Brazil dam disaster. They will pay a lazy $30 billion in restitution.

If you knew what BHP was proposing before the uncertainty around mining tax versus what they are now doing you wouldn’t call it “smoke and mirrors”. 2000 people were made redundant in Queensland and several assets have been sold off in recent years.

They are doing what they said they would do in relation to investment in Queensland. They are investing more of their money elsewhere. Squeezing the shit out of mining is short sighted and Labor has only done this because the Queensland Government can’t manage budgets. Every major project they have delivered in recent years has largely been a disaster and the amount of wastage across the board is eye-watering.

But but but but surely from the leafy green suburbs of the Eastern suburbs of Sydney you can know everything about QLD politics?? All we have heard the last week is on abortion because it’s the only thing Labor can hang their hats onto.

This Labor government have been an absolute disaster in almost every way and will rightfully be turfed out tonight. They have even got the doctors and hospitals off side up here. Not sold on the opposition but Labor have had long enough to Derp it up.

I respect Gronk's opinion on most matters, but I have worked in and closely with the resources sector for more than 20 years and some of what he says is ill informed. Its not a perfect sector, but the idea that large taxes don't impact investor confidence is not consistent with my own lived experience.

Miles has actually campaigned very well and Crisafulli has been far too 'small target'. As a result, I think it will be lot closer than most people thought a month ago, but the LNP will still get in with a small majority. Looking forward to the coverage tonight.

Miles has made it much closer than it should have been, he has somehow made people forget he was Palachooks right hand man for years. I think it’s more to do how ordinary the opposition have been more than anything.

You’re BHP and QLD focused and ignoring all the mining companies that pay minimum or zero tax.

IF BHP are oaying their fair share if company tax just as other AXS200 companies do, then that’s great, but don’t defend them if they are not.

Yeah I wasn’t talking about QLD politics at all you twit. I am talking about the resouces sector and the f**kers who pay no tax. I know you didn’t read my post and just tagged on because you saw the opportunity to sledge.

Yep the resources sector needs to continually bail out shitty governments who have no idea how to plan or budget.

Gronk the expert on everything.

You are ignoring a few things:

1. ‘Fair Share’ Is a nebulous term and one that shouldn’t be determined by well to do folks who have all care and no responsibility.

2. Has anyone broken the law? Plenty of rich individuals know how to work the system when it comes to tax. Why aren’t they contributing their ‘fair share’.

3. Tax itself is an incomplete measure of an organisation’s contributions to the communities within which they operate.

I know it’s fashionable to shit on the mining sector, but with our obligations to decarbonise we are more reliant on them than ever. How do you think wind turbines or solar panels get developed?
