The police in some areas are incredibly overfunded. They have tanks. What the f**k do they need tanks for?
A lot of that money can go to social programs, education, housing, etc. The best way to stop crime is to look after the people in the community so they don't feel they have to become criminals in order to survive.
Prevention is better than the cure.

Defund the Police does not mean no police. It means that they start from a clean slate and re-think how they deal with social services and policing.

They defunded in Compton and Camden with positive results.

I heard that due to the imbalance of resources in the county where George Floyd was murdered, most punters are ferried to hospital in the back of a police car than an ambulance. Child welfare calls are picked up by police instead of social workers etc.

The police have an engrained attitude of racism and intollerance and because they have a last in first out policy, reducing funding to the current force means that the good apple new cops are pushed out and bad apples remain. That's why they needed to start again in Compton.

Nutters on the fringes thankfully don't make the hard decisions. There are precidents in defunding (aka redistribution of public purse) and I'm sure that decisions will be made only after careful consideration and planning.

"Defund" has been adopted as a slogan for anarchy by those who oppose the BLM voice. In reality it's the opposite. It's bringing community back with a clean slate and in no way letting the inmates run the prison

Criminality isn't just about survival. Some people are just violent, controlling merkins who want power over others, even if their physical needs are met. At least having a police force gives these merkins something to do.
