The more I see of Penny Wong representing us on the world stage as our Foreign Minister, the more I think she is seriously future Prime Minister material. She is truly an amazing politician.
Her performance today in England is something the country as a whole should be proud of.

For the record, I thought highly of her many, many years ago. It was quite obvious that she was a once in a generation type politician. We don't get many of those these days.

She was asked about the PM's job some 3 or 4 years ago but she said she didn't want the job.

I agree with you, she has been excellent and I always thought she would make a great PM.

She's quality - but would need to contest a House seat (rather than stay in the Senate) to become a possible PM, something as Twizzle says she has pretty much ruled out.

A shame... but after the treatment Julia received, is the Australian populaton ready for another female in charge - especially a non-Anglo non-hetero female? I think Penny probably knows that the majority sadly aren't ready yet.

I don’t think Julia experienced anything worse than ScoMo. It’s just that one of them deserved it.

The far right isn't, and probably never will be, but those are the types that will defend ScoMo and the likes of George Pell. Tony Abbott's speech yesterday was sickening.

I guess the point is are the swinging voters who count ready for such a person ?

Personally, I don't see what gender, sexual preference, and/or heritage, have anything to do with their ability to govern, although her being Asian seems to have had an effect on our relationship with China, together with her ability to deal with delicate situations like this.

Don't be fooled by Dutton's "there's no detail, what are people voting for ?" The finer details were never going to be locked in stone by the constitution. The constitution will recognise First Nations People and their rights. Then parliament will set laws from time-to-time so that the system works. If Dutton doesn't like the legislation passed by the Labor party, he can change it when he gets into power, provided that it is constitutional.

PS It is not a third chamber. The independent voice does not have veto powers.

Agree. Sadly I'm not sure the swinging voters are ready. They might be swinging in a more positive way lately... but I fear it just takes the right-leaning media to latch onto a Dutton or Paulien sound byte (or a Gina Reinhart/Clive Palmer sponsored ad campaign) for swingers to enact the negative part of their swing cycle.

Hopefully we (they / the swingers) can grow out of it, and embrace differences in gender and culture that shouldn't be controversial in terms of ability to govern.

Either do I. Most the teachers ( who teach the kids) and young people are all lefties. Conservative feels a dirty word and a lot of people almost get made to feel like they have a disease or are a greddie and selfish piece of shit if lean right.
I see it even on dating SITES. Literally 95% say LEFT.

I hope they stay in for 10yrs. You need that much time to see changes. And it will be great to see all the lefties realise that the good old days are gone. Capitalism is in full swing. The cream has risen to the top. We are a business now and we need to run our country like one to remain wealthy. And whoever is in power we will always gave the same problems in our lives and country. Won't make a lick of difference.
