The problem with yanks is not that they're dumber than Aussies, it's just that there's so many of them and they're not at all shy about it.

The focus and scrutiny on the US is exponentially greater. That’s the biggest factor imo.

No doubt, but culturally the Yanks are more loud and proud than Aussies, so even without the added scrutiny they stand out more in a crowd.
