According to this article his dad (Manoa) left when Jarryd was 6 months old, and then he had an alcoholic step-father.

So you could be on the money - but at some point (in adulthood) personal responsibility kicks in and Hayne shouldn't have needed a role model after say 2014 to keep him out of trouble.
