I find it quite strange as a nation that we jump up and down when an athlete is found to have used performing enhancing drugs - but have no issue with performance enhancing swimsuits.
If our swimmers are so damn good (and they are) then why do they see the need to use spaceage swimsuits to give them an additional edge. All competitors should be racing on equal terms - isn't that what racing is about?
World records are falling like ten-pins at the Aussie trials - some are being absolutely smashed. Would they have broken these records without the suits?? We will never know. Maybe they would have, but as it stands I have a question mark about all of the times being recorded.
The World Smimming body (FINA) should show some guts and ban all of these types of performance enhancing swimsuits. Back to togs - fullstop! If everyone is wearing the same thing - whats the difference. At least then the winner has no question mark hanging over their heads about whether they are the fastest swimmer or not.
It still irks me that Cathy Freeman chose to wear that silly suit when she won Gold at the Sydney Games. She didn't need the thing - she would have won anyway. So why put that thought into everyones head that it may have been the suit that was the difference?
If we can't win wearing the same apparel as other competitors, then we simply aren't good enough. This is about who is the fastest swimmer - not who has the most technologically advanced swimsuit producer. Do we hand over our medals to Speedo if we win? Its about swimming - not Speedo!
What a shame this has overshadowed our magnificent Aussie swimmers. After the Olympics, I would like our swimmers to be recognised for their ability, skill, dedication and determination - not for our swimsuits to be at the cutting edge!!
Cheers !
