How is he able to get a work visa with a charge like that hanging over him?
I remember a player last year, Crocker maybe?, who was refused a visa for a drink driving charge that was years and years old....

That's what I'm wondering , if i was convicted of stealing a Mars Bar from Woolies I'd probably be unable to enter pretty much any country around the world so how does this gimp on bail after being sentenced to 16 months prison get to enter another country ?

Bird got a visa cos his case was still outstanding - he had never been found guilty ... crocker and others had been found guilty in the past

maybe it is at the discretion of the country you want to be based in. not sure but just throwing it out there.
Got it in one, as far as I understand. Under French immigration rules he's still able to play until he's exhausted his appeals... UK would have been a lot tougher even with the charge pending.

it's a well timed message to any bloke who feels the need to asault women.

what he should do is bite the bullet and accept the sentence and then if he feels the need to go back to the game that made him a house hold name, he should use his profile to send a message to to every young bloke out there and educate them.

well timed message to anything involving assault period.

sorry - but I cannot fathom why the hell she would be defending him after what he did to her - I can only imagine she's feeling rather guilty about something

This is the whole problem with domestic violence - the victims are so disempowered because of the nature of the dependency in their relationship - whether financial / family / emotional reasons.

It's why Bird's legal tactics failed. They kept trying to get the charges and the AVO dropped because she was not pressing charges. NSW Police policy has changed dramatically so that the victim's reluctance to proceed on DV matters is now very rarely a factor in dropping charges, because of the pattern that recurs so often.

The Court was never going to give it much weight and neither were the police. It seems they were still pushing that aspect in sentencing yesterday.

this one is a bit different ... high profile, no kids involved, and from what i have read she is financially independant .... I cannot for the life of me see what she sees in him to stay with him but even worse DEFEND HIM!

I thought she was here only on a student visa... I could be wrong but think her length of additional stay once her study period finished would be/have been dependent on officially establishing a relationship?

The funny thing is that she described him in the telegraph today as "one of the most loving, sensitive and yet principled men I've ever met".... Hmmm would a guy that's principled, accident or no accident, try and get someone else to take the wrap for it?

I hope the 8 months go painfully long for him.

Perhaps she needs to get out more?

What I find strange about the whole debacle, is that if he didn't do it, or it was some sort of strange accident, then why hasn't she made it public knowledge. Both their reputations are now tarnished, so even if it was some strange sexual ritual that caused it to happen, it would now make sense to say so.

Anyway Birdy, just be careful if you here " Hey there boy, your'e looking mighty cute in them there boots, now! while in the slammer.
