I absolutely agree that the AFL does a better job of protecting and developing the interests of their game and their clubs (whatever one thinks of their methods). As well as the weird insular mindset that contributes to that (e.g. the mandatory questions to any international visitor as to whether they love our great game), I think it is partly due to the fact that they had to work out a way to fund themselves without poker machine revenues. From the 50's on NSWRL clubs got hooked on the gambling dollar, and because of the barriers to competition, didn't have to think too hard to survive.
