Can anyone shed some light on what the go is with

1: IPOD...Is this a pain in the backside in terms of having to get Apple software etc

2: MP3 USB Player... I see them advertised for about $100 with 128 meg

3: Sony Diskman....got one , but it jumps if I run with it.

Here's my question , I am going over sea's for about 2 months at the end of the year. I gone away before with " Car supermix tapes" and with Cd players .
I like the idea of these mp3 gadgets but haven't even checked them out yet.
Is it just a case of me downloading my cd's onto my computer and then converting the songs to MP3 then dumping them via a USB cable onto this little player?
As for the IPOD thingy I can get one cheap of a bloke at the pub  but they sound a bit busy.

What holds more music and what exactly is an IPOD?
or should I just stick to the local Vietnamese radio stations?

If you can get a cheap IPOD.... DO IT!
They kick ass!! They are the same type of idea as the MP3 player, except it uses a hard drive for the files.
An MP3 player with 128mb will only hold roughly 30 songs.
An IPOD comes in differnt sizes. The largets one holds 10 000 songs..

If you can get an IPOD you will never regret it..

I have an IPOD... And believe me, they are the way to go... No other walkman / mp3 player has the accessories that the IPOD does. It is an awesome piece of technology, they for this reason can be expensive dependant on what size you are looking for....

People bitch and moan that the battery dies after 2 years, but this is a load of crap mine is still going strong. They are easily configurable and you can do alot of techy shit with it. Even port the LINUX O/S onto it 8)

They have alot of support for both PC and MAC, the software Itunes is also pretty cruisy.

If i were you, id look for an Ipod Mini, not as expensive and they have a ton of accessories.

They are basicaly just a hard drive with a simple Environment loaded onto it to display the songs and your options. You have the choice with the IPOD of either using USB2.0 or FireWire to access your ipod to transfer the songs onto it, both are very quick.

Don't waste money on either an MP3 Player or an old skool Walkman! What you want is an IPOD! They are the shiz nizzle and if you look on Ebay you can score some at a dirt dirt cheap price.

IPOD's are the way of the future. You can put your whole computer of songs on it and then some. Take it to yours friends place and d-load there's as well (assuming apple technology is at hand)

My humble opinion: IPOD all the way! :p

Yes they are great but,,,, they only play mp3s.Thats it, so Ive heard.
Bloody over priced to.
I have a Ben Q Joybee120, 256mb. Now I know it has a smaller storage but I can fit 3-4 albums on or around 100 punk songs! It does me fine for a few days at work. Awesome sound, plays wmvs, mp3, fm radio, voice recorder even record the radio! Its the size of a pack of matches. 8)

Sorry to maintain the same general idea... I got an iPod, it'd definitely be the goer here.

Currently its only half full and I've put about 100 CDs onto it. The software isn't a hassle at all - in fact its probably better than anything else out there.

Sounds good guys,
I 'm not afraid to embrace technology.
I have since learn't about the software called ITRIP in which you set your IPOD to an unused radio frequency and then bang hit the play button an tune your radio's in and off you go.

I'd go with a portable AM/FM boom box with dual cassette capability. You only need 12 D size batteries to run it. The best thing is that you will be able to copy all your favourite songs on to a blank cassette. You can also listen to the radio.

Either that or the IPOD.

you asked the right guy here Cacha

I run a wireless house.
plan your digital music revolution well & you will be happy.

First thing you need to do is convert all of your cd's into mp3 or the better mp4 format. Personally I stuck with MP3.
I use Itunes(software) on a cheap Imac I bought at a garage sale for $200.
The imac sits next to my stereo & plays out the files very nicely.
I encode my files(rip) at what they call "insane" or 320kbs stereo
If you like your frequency range like I do, 128 kb(common) will not do. The frequency loss is very, very noticeable. Even at 320, you wil notice.
Down side is that the higher the encoding rate, the more space the file takes up. I run a 200 gig hard drive in the imac. At present I have 600 cds stored in it at 320kbps. I have uses roughly half of the disk.

now heres the good bit.

If you set up a wireless network in your house(around $300) you can stream all of the music to any location within 50 metres, simultaneously.
e.g. play an mp3 file on your laptop in the backyard, but the file remains on your server(my imac).
In the near future, ipods will have very good wireless connectivilty allowing you to do the same from your server to your ipod.
But for the moment, you are best to get a hard drive based mp3 player.
Your options are probably 3

Ipod
the good. win/mac itunes is the best software ever for managing your digital media.
The bad. Expensive. limited life with non replaceable battery

Creative
the good cheaper, replaceable battery
The bad bit more difficult with macs than Ipod, sound not quite as good as Ipod.

JNC
new product with good reviews & pricing & I havent tested.

In summary, encode your files at the highest quality bit rate available, you. will be happy & will never have to do it again.Store all of your files in one location & back them up. Dont buy your device until you go OS(duty ree before you leave) & save a packet.

Cacha
My ripper/server is 400mhz imac wih firewire(connects to ipod fast)
I paid $250 bux for it.
The hard drive cost me another 200
It is the centre of my world, not the players.

you could do the same with a cheap windows computer, but they are clumsy, flaky & second rate.

To give you an idea of what I did with this little "ripper" of a machine I connected a second usb cd drive & ran another ripe encoder called "lame". i used it simultaneuosly with itunes.
In 1 week I had ripped all of my cds. every time i went past I put 2 disks in.
The programs connect via the internet immediately & go to an online database to retreive all of the cd info. (Track names etc.)
Besides having to put the air con on & a fan the machine performed flawlessly for 1 week straight with out needing to restart it once.
Of course, I use OSX(jag)
You only ever see your cd's once. Then into deep storage.
its also good when freinds come over you can raid their cars for music
I can do about 2 cds in 20 mins on the imac.
