However, to give some credence to your statement, the hilarious thing about the Dragons’ whole name is that, if St. George DID slay the dragon, it is nonsensical to call the team ‘The St. George Dragons.’ [Unless, of course, the name symbolises a team that destroys itself…]

At least ‘Dragon Slayer’ makes sense both grammatically and conceptually!

They were originally The Dragon Slayers though. It's when they shortened it to Dragons it became dumb.

So, being as though the St George Dragon Slayers morphed into the St George Dragons one may surmise they are flogging themselves.
