I once played in a game where a guy got run out because he thought it was a dead ball. Padded up, and didn't play a shot, and the ball ricocheted out to deep square leg.They started off for a quick single, both players got to mid pitch before they realized it was going to be a dead ball. Stopped, had a chat, realized the ball was technically still live, both ran to the same end, and when the ball finally came in from the boundary after about 60 seconds the striker was run out. Absolute farce.

Ranks up there with a batsman getting injured, and the runner (back when you could get one) would wander around outside of the crease at square leg and you could casually run him out because he was a dopey prick who wasn't watching the game or what he was doing.
