i recall when the papalli thing was happening a year ago many people were adamant he could only choose to renege on us and go back with canberra if they matched our offer ..... well it aint true .... on ch 9 they said tedesco has stayed with the tigers for less coin - its simply a choice a player can make up until end of round 13 .... its a dumb f**kin rule

Heard grant mayer on the radio and he pretty well said that canberra wanted to make him a marquee player, so it was tricky getting things sorted out (one assumes tigers are not making him marquee).

Maybe the NRL should just make a rule that signings can't be announced until the contract is registered by the NRL ?

The problem is that they deregulated the 'no signing' period (since it was being flaunted anyway).
Currently The Bulldogs could approach Ma'u and offer him a 3 year deal starting from 2018 and onwards. He'd be playing with us the next 3 seasons, but all the while being contracted to the Dogs beyond that.
He would be insane NOT to sign a contract, who knows what could happen to him??

So the 'matching clause' gives the 'home club' the right to offer the same base contract prior to June 30 the previous season. Stops the above scenario happening to a degree (although that's a fairly extreme version of it).

I think the NRL would be best served introducing trading windows, or even a full blown trading system, it could be written up in such a way to help clubs who develop players not be left with nothing.

David furner never had these articles written when he was coach. There never seemed to be any issues with Canberra's recruiting before this year

So they still have an abitrary date of no approach, which most likely gets flaunted anyway...

I suppose 12 months or more is a bit too long to be approaching players anyhow, you'd want to be certain you were getting a healthy and good player that far in advance.

We still have Board issues dimwit as do Manly but you dont hear Arthur complaining or Toovey.

I lived in Canberra when I first left home.

The Private Bin, Tropicana, Mooseheads..... Was fantastic night life in Civic. 24 hours service at some as well.

We had 24 hour service until some f**kwit ex-cop, ex-rugby league player got that sorted out. Then he went on to be the Eels CEO. Mooseheads is still there (after burning down once or twice)....it used to be a biker pub called JDs...then a few patrons started disappearing which wasn't good for business.
