I’d also say the left has gone through its own equal and opposite redefinition.
Not to the same extent - the Dems have been centre-right ever since I remember, their current platform doesn’t differ a lot from the Clinton/Obama years. The actual left wing of the DNC (Bernie, AOC, Omar etc) are kept largely sidelined as they always have been.

I’m not sure I was referring to the party as much as the populace, but it’s a fair point any way. Maybe the right have embraced their fringes and sidelined their sensibles, while the left have sidelined their fringes (and, it seems, embraced their seniles)

But in the populace, the progressive left seems to be a shit show

Then again, I’m just seeing what I see occasionally on the news. I’m not at the grocery stores or whatever.

I’m in the States in a few weeks- will be interesting to see.

Was there last year and went to a few different places. New York, which I’ve been to several times, was a mess!

If by the progressive left you mean the idpol types, they really don’t have the same influence in government as they do in the media. They make a lot of noise but that’s really it.

A mess as in physical rubbish and homeless or organisational like road work, public transport etc.

What do you guys make of the Supreme court ruling?

Most cynics of the court expected a muddy waters non committal ruling on presidential immunity, or at least some attempt to appear impartial to the current threat of the US having a fascist leader and Judiciary.

Many Americans will be in shock, a core will be celebrating, until one day a future President who is not their guy abuses his official powers to affect their lives with impunity.

Personally I believe the SCOTUS just lost Donald Trump the election by weaponizing the narrative that he is planning on being a dictator for life.

I mean coming from our part of the world where you wouldn’t think twice about prosecuting a PM if they did something crooked in power it seems totally nuts. But the US is weird, who the hell knows.

It's really interesting.
George Bush probably committed some war crimes?
Obama ordered the killing of Bin Laden?
Clinton..... well.

It's pretty stupid you can't be held accountable, some extremes would be assassinating political opponents as you deem them a threat to *********.
Lets not mention JFK.

I wish the country never existed in the first place as we had to put up with the whole world revoles around the USA be politics, wars, entertainment etc....it must one of the few countries around the world that has never been invaded or had wars on it's shores for the past 150 years.
Unless of course you count the invasion, occupation and confiscation of the American Indian lands after the civil war (which falls into your 150 year limitation).

I think that being a President can make you a lighting rod for frivolous and politically-motivated litigation. I certainly don't mind there being something to curb that. But yeah, certainly hoping it doesn't allow for carte blanch immunity. That's the picture that Sotomajor seems to paint

The irony of this is how difficult it is to charge a serving or former President with anything before the Supreme court made an insane sovereign style power grab of the entire U.S. system.

Empires crumble from within, America's empire is on the way out. The only way to stop it is to keep Trump from becoming the Dictator infinitum, change the Supreme court life terms, overhaul the entire political system.

The people, the calm ones, the sane ones, will be quietly going nuts over yesterdays madness.

When they snap the country will tear itself apart. America is like a collection of countries, with very different outlooks state to state. It is not hard to re imagine that map if you take away the constitution and the foundations of their system.

They will become like another Europe, all these little state blocks constantly fighting and struggling for power.

The irony is that Trump is preaching that Biden is making America a laughing stock overseas when it is he, Trump, that is causing the mayhem. Trump hanging on to classified documents and refusing to give them back is ludicrous, the courts and FBI should have sorted it out already. Any thought of this man having the launch codes in the future terrifies me.

I agree with the first sentence. But I actually don't think there's any way to stop it. It's happening because Empires eventually crumble.

What is the issue with Biden policies? A decent, honest, self sacrificing and well meaning person in a cess pit of American politics. But no-one sensible argues he is not too old. Trump is also way to old, but he is also a total moran and incompetent. His faults as a person are too long to list.

It should not be lost that one of the Republican's 'alleged' greatest Presidents (I don't agree that he was great, I think he was a psycho leftover from the McCarthy era) had dementia will in office. I have read this from multiple sources writing at the time and in the 90's. An example:

See https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/jan/17/ronald-reagan-alzheimers-president-son

it isn’t about policies. It should be, but it isn’t.

Both he and Trump and both too old, true. But they cut very different figures. Trump, aside from being fat, looks in relatively good health. Biden needs to be assisted down the stairs and has that worrying old man shuffle. Trump is mentally sharp enough to talk shit. Biden lacks mental acuity and gets disorientated in thought.

I don’t want Trump to be president but the democrats have basically seen to it that he runs unopposed. Biden is not fit to be President.

I mean, Biden just came out blaming his international travel schedule (from a few weeks before) for his debate performance and said 'he was nearly falling asleep' on the stage.

When that's your spin, you are toast.
