Yeah, it's one of the worst exhibitions of in-play kicking I have ever seen. He just grubbered it on the 1st 20 m out and got lucky because the Dragons guy went into touch. Someone just needs to make him a running 6 and only have him kick in an emergency. He doesn't have a boot at all.
Yeah he's just like Luai

He had an off day today, but generally speaking Burton's boot is one of his major strengths. In terms of raw striking he's the only one who rivals Cleary/Reynolds, he just hasn't had time to develop the control those two have. His bomb is ridiculous, right up there with Nath's. He's got nice variation/deception in his short kicking game too. Easy to forget that Nath took quite a while to develop his boot too.

Burton's just suffering in exactly the way many of us expected him too. He's a kid with insane potential, trying to do too much behind a pea heart pack for a basket case of a club. Every half in the world would look worse there than they would here (or at any of the stronger clubs). Unfortunately for him, the RL world tends to forget that and as a result his hype levels are dropping in a way that will influence the level of his next deal. Tough to be too critical of a kid inking his first big deal, but I think he'll look back on this period of his life and wish he'd waited a while for an offer that didn't put so much responsibility on his shoulders.

Outstanding post. I'd like it twice if I could.

A hard 2 years will do him good in the long run. He'll be bailing on the Dogs in November

To an even worse team.

He and JAC are poster players for why you don't leave big clubs.

In the first few rounds the Dogs pack looked decent and held its own.

The playmakers just looked like they had NFI when in attacking positions or any game management.

With a decent coach and solid pre season the Dogs could have at least jagged a few more wins IMO.

What I've seen of the Bulldogs Burton hasn't been good and not really in a way that you could blame the team for. Halves can go alright and look good in a shit team.

It's bizarre that's he's doing all the general play kicking.

His transition back to the halves from a whole season playing in the centres hasn’t been smooth. No question.

At the same time it can’t be easy playing as a half / five eight playing behind a beaten forward pack.

He is a quality player, still young, learning, he will come good whether that is at the Bulldogs or elsewhere remains to be seen.

I still question why people think he is a half. He does a lot of stuff brilliantly, but most of it happens when he is receiving the ball and space has been created from others. His other strength is he has a great long kick (albeit the kicking game part hasn’t caught up yet), but there is no rule that says if you kick you need to be a half.

The half position also exposes his few flaws significant; namely that he is still learning the game and that he makes poor decisions in defence quite often.

It almost like a manager has told him there is more money and game in the halves…

He's a far better Jack Wighton. Big running 6

But Jack plays for a team that (when playing well) plays over the advantage line; their forwards make metres and then they jump out of dummy half and make metres through the middle. Jack is good in those situations or close to the line. Same with Burto.

Jack doesn’t set up the big back line movements. Same with Burto.

No surprises there , exactly what his manager told him.

The big money is in the spine. Why would you want to willingly to be transitioned elsewhere for less money.

Jacks a dally m winner.

People are quick to forget the year he had when he won that.

Hes canberras best every week often when the rest of them are shithouse.

Burton has a long way to go to get to Jacks level..

Thats not to say i doubt him.

He has the skills.

I tend to think in the modern game hes skills are more aligned to a wide running backrower.

The days of the big 5/8 are kinda long gone. With the interchange rules and fatigue in the game the 5/8 position will be dominated by the smaller more elusive blokes. Puru has fg written all over him. Similar to luai in style i guess.

I really hope burto can kick on at 5/8. Im just not convinced its his best spot yet..

The ballplaying lock was dead but its was something I was calling for since Blake Austin and Carty. Now Yeo might be the best player in the world.

If Austin was born 10 or so years later it would be interesting to see how he would go the way the game is now and the huge improvement in player development.

Blakes played 5/8 hes whole career. Never been a 13 and despite what you might think he lacked the kgs.

Not as big as youd think. 93kgs. And at the back end if his career at his biggest..

To put things in perspective burto is bigger than every other big 5/8 basically..

Hes currently 96 and has a lot of filling out to do..

Anasta was 97
Freddie finished at 96
Barrett 95
Austin 93 atm.

Take one look at burts and its obvious he will put on 5 or so kgs easy. Hes still a stick.

Hell finish at 102+ kgs easy. So wade graham territory.

Not that weight is a sole contributor to position but i just think hes a better playing when hes running the ball solely..

Big reason he was such an instant success last year
