Our Forward Pack

Last night this is what i find hard to believe.

M.Bryant 13 for 108
A.Whatmough 13 for 186 metres
B. Kite 13 for 111 metres
G. Stewart 13 for 122 metres
G Rose made 8 for 149 metres

1417 total metres

all their tackles are around the 22 - 30 tackles

1287

Compare this to our lot

Cayless made 17 hit ups for 181 metres plus he made 30 tackles
Cordoba made 8 for 99 metres
Cannings made 10 for 89 metres
Taia made 4 for 53 metres
Hindmarsh made 41 tackles 6 hit ups 44 metres
I Hindmarsh made 31 tackles 5 hit ups 38 metres
Wagon made 35 tackles 3 for 22 metres

We only had 1 player to make it over 100 metres and closest second was Cordoba making 99, stats dont often tell you a true story but when you see this manly def share the workload around in a game, and as a team they are reaping the rewards for working as a team.

As for us we are relying on 1 person to make the yards maybe have a second player put in then on the flip side we have 3 or 4 people doing all the tackling, no wonder why we struggle in the arm wrestle due to our key players doing all the work, and then we say to guys like hindy and cayless now try and break the line.

So do we start with Cayless and Cordoba to set the platform then bring on cannings and guys like Taia to help in the hit ups.

We have to learn to share the workload around the forward pack all of them need to put in, not only relying on Cayless, hindmarsh or MoiMoi when they are on the ground.

Gus said it last night, Manly work for each other win lose or draw, we can take a page out of their book. We must learn to do so quickly, and if our current guys cant do it, pick the players that want to.

This is why MoiMoi is such a loss to the team, he makes metres and Cayless makes his metres and they set a good platform for the team. When 1 of these guys is out we suffer.

Cayless was unbelievable last night. I hope Taia gets a shot because if he gets up to the 10 hit up range per match (meaning he needs to stay out there) then this kid will make metres and be usefull for us coming from the bench.

Who have we got that can help Cayless in making metres?

Do we need to go and get a big bopper that will help these younger kids come through, i got no idea but if we do not fix this then we will loose to the better teams and look good against the average ones.

it is definitely a worry.

our 11, 12 and 13 are primarily defenders and they are to buggered to do a hit up when we have the ball.

i think hagan has to work out why this and how they can share the load around a bit more, especially when finch, marsh, riddell and ben smith are all good defenders.

i wonder whether playing hindy for 80mins is really all it is cracked up to be. maybe a break for 10mins before halftime and 10 after would make him a more potent attacking weapon.

maybe if we didnt have so many 80min forwards we could share the workload around a bit and give them all a freshen up at some point in the game.

i rekon we should play hard for brett white from the storm who is off contract, we need to (and this is an absolute must) sign at least 2 good forwards for next year, because thats what the eels have been missing the last 2 seasons.

Fui Fui & Fa'soso are good in the metres department. I recon they add some aggresion to the pack aswell which is something we desperately need.

we hammered the bulldogs pack a couple of weeks ago

That was when we had Cayless and Moi Moi together on the park. Like eels4life said, without one of them we struggle for go forward.

Thats my point, Why are we struggling?

Do we have too many second row type players at the club that are bigger and can handle playing prop for us.

Is Cannings a prop or a scary second rower. ( when he does hit form )

Fa'aoso is a second rower that runs hard and he has an offload, Cordoba is a Cayless type of player, We need to get someone that can help us out in the metres department.

I agree maybe its time we rested hindy at the back end of the first half and in the opening part of the second half rest him up abit when he makes 30 tackles a game he runs 10 times making 100 metres, when he does that workload then there is no way he can be effective in his running. that extra 10 - 15 mintues of rest is massive for the team.

We have lost Stringer, Vella, as props over the last 2 seasons who have we replaced them with?

I think for the rest of the season we need to put in the guys that want to do all the dirty work, Fa'aoso might be a player like that, Taia might be aswell they have size and they do def run hard.

8. Cayless - Standard
9. Riddell - he is better when he starts the game
10. Cordoba - cause moimoi is injured he makes more metres on average JUST HOLD THE BALL SON - and everything will be alright
11. Hindmarsh - Standard
12. Robinson - if he is fit he starts if not I Hindmarsh
13. Mateo - needs to be there from the start of the game so he can get a feel for it

14. PJ - standard
15. Fa'aoso ( i think he deserves a decent shot at it )
16. Paolo - he DEF derserves a shot 191CM 110KG big boppa
17. Cannings
18. Wagon
19. Green
20. Tsoulos Cmon son fire up watch 300 before you go out and play MOLON LAVE TSOULOS ---

our bench can be anything, we have a whole heap of players that we can choose from but who do we go with. and again if they dont show us anything then make the changes.

he's re-signed with the Storm but I wouldn't mind going after Ben Cross.

It doesn't matter who you have in the pack, if you don't have the ball you cant go forward.

This is true, a big issue for us is the unforced errors, missed tackles and cheap penalties we give away once our players get tired. Also our 5th tackle option are sometimes not good enough.

Excluding the hooker, we need to mix our pack in terms of defensive and attack.

2 x 80 min defenders is all we need in the pack. We have Benny who is solid as a rock. Thus, I would have Benny on one side, Wagon the other and let Hindy plug the middle. I'm sorry but Hindy is not a metre grabber no more.

Then in defense, I would put Timmy next to Benny and the 5/8th (Please be Green) next to Wags.

2 props in Caylo and Moimoi or Cordoba if Fui is not fit.

Which leaves a metre grabbing backrower

I don't think we need to share the workload. We can have specialists defenders and specialist attackers.

In a set of 6, the ruck outs would go

1. Caylo or Cordoba
2. Fui or Zeb or Ian
3. Grothe - He had a brilliant game against the chooks when he did that
4. Attacking 2nd rower
5. Up to what Timmy wants to do. Spread it or Kick it or another ruck out.

I would never have 3 defensive players in the pack on at the same time unless we are defending a 1-8 point lead with 10 to go. BTW, I consider Caylo a go forward player not a defensive player.

So my pack would be

13. Wags or Chad
12. Zeb
11. Hindy
10. Fui
9. Riddell - for the 1st 15-20 then comes on as a 2nd rower
8. Caylo

14. PJ
15. Cordoba
16. Ian Hindmarsh as a prop
17. Paulo / Fa'aso

18. Chad

Agreed if we could have faaoso fui and possibly junior somwhere in that pack, straight away you have a pack with a bit of fear factor about them.

I don't think it is.
Riddell has to be kept away from hooker at all costs. Happy for him to play lock or second row as an interchange, but not hooker.
His service out of there on Friday was absolutely abysmal.
