Our next coach

OK, so the main contenders seem to be McClennan and Iro, with Ackland hanging around and probably contributing to the final setup.

I wonder if the club is considering approaching anyone else or taking any other applicants?

Just chucking some names out there...

Steve Georgalis has done well with his limited time so far, although is probably still in the "new coach honeymoon" phase.

Steve Folkes was always rated and could bring a hard edge.

Ricky Stuart probably wouldn't come over here, and he's a bit of a douche, but his results (generally) speak for themselves.

Daniel Anderson might be looking to come home. I doubt he'd be in the mix but personally I think we could do a lot worse than giving him another shot.

Who else is there? Or do we stick with McClennan and/or Iro as our only options?

Has the question been put to the Warriors to if they are now looking solely at one of those initial three mentioned?

I tell you this now, if we signed Ricky Stuart I would go very close to finding a new side. I wouldn't, but that's the height of my dislike for the guy.

Ricky Stuart? Welcome to the wooden spoon. ;-)

Would he even want to coach an nz-based team?

Of the names mentioned, Bluey is the only one that intrigues me, but that's purely based on what he's achieved with the Kiwi's & in the ESL. Doesn't necessarily mean he's the best option. The only (minor) reservation I have with him is that refereeing interpretations differ in the ESL. The emphasis still seems to be on letting the ball carrier get quick play the balls. Our only GF appearance was the cornerstone to the style of football that the most successful clubs employ today. The referees allowed the tackler a lot more latitude to slow down the play the ball that year and we were beaten by a side that smothered us in the ruck & pushed the boundaries of their defensive line speed beyond what all other clubs were producing at the time.

No matter who we get as a coach, I hope they don't take us too far away tactically from the direction Cleary has taken the club. I'm all for becoming a more expansive attacking side, but we should never shy away from the hard graft of grinding other sides down. As misleading as the completion stat can be, nothing will allow the likes of Melbourne and St George to suffocate their opposition out of the game like a lopsided tackle count. Not a fan of bringing Daniel Anderson back for this reason. Compare the styles & week in week out performances of those two teams with the likes of the Daniel Anderson coached Parramatta & the Smith coached Roosters.

Don't think Sticky is even half temped to coach in NZ. If he was going to go back to the NRL the doggies would be first in line IMO.

Justin Morgan????

Morgan in talks with Warriors to replace Cleary

Brad Walter July 18, 2011

FORMER Parramatta, Canberra and Warriors forward Justin Morgan has been linked to the New Zealand club's vacant coaching job for next season.
Morgan, who has been coaching Hull Kingston Rovers since 2005, is understood to have spoken to Warriors management since the club decided to release Ivan Cleary from the final year of his contract to take charge of Penrith.
The 35-year-old played two seasons with the Warriors and retired from the NRL after helping the club to the 2002 grand final. He had previously played 84 first grade matches for Parramatta between 1994 and 1999, and spent the 2000 season with the Raiders.
Morgan is under contract to Hull KR but speculation in England at the weekend suggests he would coach the Warriors with former New Zealand coach Brian McClennan as coaching director.
McClennan steered the Kiwis to victory in the 2005 Tri Nations final against Australia and was in charge the next season when the Kangaroos snatched a golden-point win in the decider at Sydney Football Stadium. He has been the favourite for the job since the Warriors announced Cleary's departure a month ago, and it seems certain he will be at the club next season in some capacity - either as head coach or coaching director.
Warriors and Kiwis assistant Tony Iro has also been mentioned as the next coach with either McClennan or the club's premiership-winning under-20s coach John Ackland as coaching director.
But the fact he wasn't appointed at the time Cleary's departure was announced suggests the Warriors are looking elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Wests Tigers could be boosted next weekend by the return from injury of dual international Lote Tuqiri, prop Todd Payten and former Kiwis winger Matt Utai.
North Queensland, who lost to the Tigers on Saturday night, are also due to welcome back co-captain Matt Scott (back) and second-rower Scott Bolton (calf).
Penrith Test star Luke Lewis is expected to undergo scans today to determine the extent of a shoulder injury he suffered in Saturday night's dramatic win over Parramatta.
Back-rower Nigel Plum also suffered a shoulder injury but Lewis is the greater concern.

That 'Iro would've been appointed at the time, so it ain't him' cobblers is exactly that - a bunch of crap.

They had to go through the process with anyone, given it was (apparently) a decision Ivan thrust upon them very quickly.

Too much guess work in the way this has played out in the media. Very little concrete evidence.

Yeah, agreed. Leave Sticky in the dark hole he's already in (as a Maroon's supporter, i was quite happy when he was appointed coach of the Blues).

Bluey is my vote, though if Iro got a chance I don't think I'd be opposed.
But if they don't pick Bluey, I pity the guy that gets it- Will need instant results or will be crucified.
Otherwise, let's do what Gould did and poach a coach from the NRL. Bennett of course! Lol, even if he could be swayed from Knights next year, if Rusty Crowe couldn't buy him it'd take some serious cash...!

I reckon appointing Iro (if that happened) would purely be for budget reasons.
McClennan for arses on pews reasons.

Ackland? Wont happen

Justin Morgan? How has his coaching gone in ESL really?

The ideal coaching partnership for me would be Bluey/Ackland for NRL and Iro back to U20's, where he was very good.

Hey Oz, genuine question. I'm curious to hear your opinion on why would you prefer a Bluey/Ackland combo with Iro looking after the 20s, over a Bluey/Iro combo, with Ackland at the 20s? Obviously it is not based on a rationale of what is good for the 20s - both Iro and Ackland have had success there, with Ackland's being the greater. I would've thought Iro is the coach being groomed into the head coaching role, and would be the natural assistant still. Anyway - if you've got the energy, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

History mainly, they have sucessfully coached together before (Mt Albert), and have a genuine understanding of what makes the other tick.

plus a bit of mutual respect makes for a good coaching team

Tony Iro has taken the jnrs to a final, so he's got what it takes. The juniors had a lot of respect for Tony.
I dont see a lot of progression in Iro's coaching career under Cleary, he's a glorified trainer.
