P2 - Full License

A mates kid is about to go for his full license & will be the first among his circle of friends. He has asked about what the test is like & has gotten a 1000 different answers from said friends & their brothers/sisters, & his parents, me etc have too much vintage to remember doing ours. Plus it'd be nothing like it was, I'm sure.

So does anyone have either recent first hand experience, or the tales of somebody trustworthy, & can share what the deal is? Seems it's a video or something where you touch a screen... But I am currently working on three hours sleep in the last thirty six hours so could quite easily have got that all wrong.

Thanks in advance.

The joys of living in Queensland and not having to go for an open licence :p:D

I did it a couple of months ago.

You have to answer 15 multiple choice questions - all the answers are in the handbook found on the RTA website. Make sure they read the Handbook, because you get the odd stats based question which no-one would know without having read the book.

Then you have 10 video questions where you touch the screen, touch the screen when you think it's safe to turn etc. This part is just like the test to get the P2 licence.

It's pretty easy.

Yeah it's my understanding that it's a combination of the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) and the Hazard Perception Test (HPT) but more advanced

Tell him to download the knowledge booklet and do the online practice questions. Without that he'll almost certainly fail.

Reason being the 15 knowledge questions include a lot of crash statistics that simply are not common knowledge, bullshit like what time of day do most crashes occur etc. reading the book makes them easy, going in blind means you pretty much have to just guess.

Mind you i did the test 3 years ago so might have changed

Exactly. I've still got another 12 months before I can go for mine and I'm already practacing.

I did it a few months ago and it's exactly as MISH said.

I read through the knowledge booklet once, which isn't too boring really and has some interesting stats.

Then I did the practice multiple-choice test on the site.

Then I did the practice simulated-driving tests on the site until I figured out how pedantic they wanted you to be in terms of spacing etc.

It was easy from there.

The only other thing I'd mention is that on the "practice question" they give you when doing the simulated driving questions in the actual test, they gave me one where I was on a three-lane
freeway in between two trucks, and told me to push the button when I would slow the car down.

After the first time I pressed it the car continued to speed along in a dangerous position, so I ended up pressing it five or six times.

When they gave me the feedback, they said I got it wrong and only needed to press it once. So I think in those questions they want you to treat it as if the car followed your initial instruction.

It took me a few hours of very relaxed reading in between tv shows one afternoon to get through.

You could probably power through it in an hour if you wanted to. I didn't take any notes or anything.

Do the practise test, memorise the answers and you are pretty set. The theory questions are basically questions about how to drive (common sense) and statistics (which you will probably need to learn, hence memorising the practise test). I did it about 18 months ago, so my memory may be a little off, but there was a few statistical questions which were repeated from the practise test. Although thinking them through logically you can kind of work them out.

The touch screen simulations is the same as the green Ps, except the scernarios will continue after your first touch (so you may have to touch the screen several times).

Overall, although it is harder than the previous 2 theory tests, it is not very difficult at all. If you make a half decent effort to prepare and are not a complete moron when it comes to driving then you should be fine.

Thanks for the responses. The book I know is getting read & reread, I think the panic is the screen touching bit. While I didn't quite get it yesterday, what "Johns Magic" said seems to be the bit causing the worry. There's no immediate feedback so do you keep hitting the screen or just assume it worked. I'll show him this thread anyway.

The stupid part is, this is a kid I'd let drive my car. He isn't the one that'll be out doing circle work on a Friday night, but he'll be the one that shits himself during the exam & fails.

I'd love to know what the safety theory is behind the NSW system as opposed to the Vic/Qld graduation system. Or is it just a cash grab?

You only need to hit it once and assume the computer picked up the touch. That said, it might ask you to touch the screen whenever you'd turn right, so you touch it once, then when that car passes by there might be another safe opening to turn, so you'd touch it again.
