Edwin Ipape is going to be a big miss for PNG.
Fullback is another position I think PNG is weak in. The 2 Hunters fullbacks probably not there yet and I don't think Nene McDonald who has been named there has ever played in that position.
What happened? I thought he was selected?

I think 99% of International Rugby Leagues problems with meaningful fixtures and public interest would be solved if this Pacific Championships eventually become a Nations Championships played every second year, alternating hemispheres. I like the pools of 3 format as their is essentially no dead rubbers. The Tier 2 tournaments fixtures would be the curtain raiser for the Tier 1 and you could really have a festival or rugby league without blowing the (NRL, RFL or IRL's) bank.

Eg:

CHAMPIONSHIP

A
Australia
Samoa

Tonga

B
New Zealand
England

Papua New Guinea

Format: Round robin group, Top 2 teams qualify for Semi Finals, Bottom teams in group play a Relegation Play off (curtain raiser to one of the Semi Finals) fixture to qualify for next tournament. Every team plays minimum 3 games, maximum 4 games over 5 weeks

TROPHY / BOWL etc

A
Fiji
Cook Islands

Wales

B
France
Lebanon

Jamaica

Format: Round Robin group, Top 2 teams qualify for Semi Finals (curtain raiser to Champs semi's) . Winner of Final (curtain raiser to Champ final) promoted to Tier 1 tournament. Every team plays minimum 2 games, maximum 4 games over 5 weeks. Teams finishing 3rd in the group have to enter a regional qualification for the next tournament.

Simple.

Huge loss but it's a big opportunity for judah rimbu who's impressed me this year with his development.

Where's Alex max?

TBH, this tournament annoys me. It's week 1 and I don't even get to watch the Kiwis play. Surely they can come up with some type of 4 team tournament so all teams can play each week.
Nations not playing could have played against Lebanon giving the cedars 3 end of season internationals

Just did some tournament average crowd comparisons:

1999 Tri Nations: 17,574
2000 World Cup: 8,514
2004 Tri Nations 26,041
2005 Tri Nations 22,163
2006 Tri Nations 25,825
2008 World Cup 16,302
2009 4 Nations 16,584
2010 4 Nations 19,634
2011 4 Nations 18,295
2013 World Cup 16,374
2014 4 Nations 20,675
2016 4 Nations 18,951
2017 World Cup 13,646
2019 Oceania Cup 14,045
2022: World Cup 13,667
2023 Pacific Championship: 18,816

Last year's Pac Championship did pretty well honestly, best since 2016 and certainly around about the mark of the old 4 Nations.
