Panthers salary cap squeeze
Former Blues Origin prop Tim Grant is believed to be the latest name on Gus Gould’s ‘hit list’ of players on big money he wants to move on from Penrith.

The Panthers have had massive salary cap issues in recent seasons, with players being paid well above market value.

That has resulted in star players like Luke Lewis, Michael Gordon, Michael Jennings and Lachlan Coote being cut loose.

There’s strong mail around rival clubs that Grant, a hard-working local junior with over 100 games for the club and two origin appearances for the Blues, will be tapped on the shoulder either this season or next year.
Grant missed the Panthers’ big win over the Knights last weekend through injury.

Should we sign Tim Grant?

Yep.
This is an absolute requirement we have at the present time.
Huge opportunity.

I hope we are making enquiries. Need an experienced marquee prop to compliment the pack that showed up yesterday.

However, I'm not sure if this rumour is true and if so, I don't have too much confidence in us making offers...

Does anyone know how much room we have left in the cap to go after a player like Grant?

That's not public knowledge. All you'll get is 'best guesses' from a few.
You might as well have a stab in the dark yourself, you'll be just as accurate.
I'll bet you at least one poster will question why we don't spend our complete cap :sarcasm::crazy:

I'll take a stab and suggest that, with the right negotiation skill and a bit of ruthlessness, we could get him mighty cheap this year or next year, as Panthers would be paying a portion of his wage.

That's assuming the rumour is remotely true. I hope someone is looking into it...

If we were going for Fifita, you’d expect that we were doing okay from a cap perspective
Most of our crew are pretty cost effective
May need to keep some aside for a quality hooker
Unloading Garvey for disciplinary reasons may free up a little extra
Back loading is also an option

Grant fits the mould of what we are lacking so I'm keen to sign him for his market value, don't want to pay overs or we will miss out on other buys when we run out of cap

It is.

There is just something about Penrith. All the players that they have moved on have all been good for their new clubs.

They let go of quality players they paid too much for, looks like they haven't quite finished here by the sounds of things. Hope it works in our favour
