Newcastle lost to Dragons last night. We can go 2 points clear with a win on Sunday. It's been a while since any Penrith team has been 1st in a comp.

Well the injury curse has spread. Moss, VTK, Foster didn't take the field. Satini & Riccardi went off injured. We had effort was just lacking troops. Still a 3 way at the top.

Gus Gould a hit with Lithgow coaches/players

Monday, 16 April 2012 19 :41

A good crowd made up of coaches and players of Lithgow and district rugby league clubs packed into the Lithgow Workmens Club for a coaching seminar from Phil "Gus" Gould, under 21 coach Garth Brennan and recruitment officer Jim Jones of the Penrith Panthers. The seminar was highly entertaining and informative with Brennan first to take the floor. He spoke of his coaching of player skills, moves, defence and attack.
Recruitment officer Jim Jones then addressed the crowd, and told of Penrith's criteria on signing young players.
"At our club we feel that 13 to 14 year old boys are too young; we target 15 to 17 year olds and leave them in their own environment until they are old enough to bring down to Penrith."
Gould, the director of the Penrith Club and a multi media star on TV, radio and print, spoke next of the state of the game and how it is going in the bush along with a number of entertaining stories on players and the game.
All three invited questions from the floor and issued a general invitation to locals to attend Penrith training sessions or call them if they have a problem.
"It was excellent for the three men to give up their time free of charge and a big thanks go out to them," Wolves' coach Graeme Osborne said.
"It is an excellent gesture and you can see that all three love the game and are keen to development it here in the bush."

Garth Brennan seems to have the respect of the U20 players, unlike Melville last year. Could be one of the reasons why the results have been so much better this year.

So Cartwright & Smith have got a promotion. Does anyone know who for? We had no chance against the Tigers once injuries hit. Hopefully the same hasn't happened here.

Cartwright was always coming up to 20s at the end of ball season regardless of injuries. Definatly gives the team a bit of punch especially as he will get a few games to get up to tempo

Knight savours sweet revenge

02 May, 2012 12:00 AM
IT WAS karma at its best. Ignored by the Newcastle Knights, Chris Knight was released from the club on Thursday and immediately relocated to the foot of the mountains. By Monday night, he'd kicked the winning field goal to seal the Panthers Toyota Cup side's thrilling 29-28 victory over — you got it — the Newcastle Knights. Justin Brady asks the questions. Toyota Cup coach Garth Brennan provides the answers.
So tell us about the rebirth and revenge of Chris Knight?
He's been in the Newcastle system all his life and he wasn't getting a game, so he rang me and said is there any chance I can come down and get a game of footy. Like a Hollywood movie, he kicked the field goal in the last five seconds to win the match. You couldn't write a script like that.
How elated was the side at full-time?
The boys showed more emotion than I've ever seen all year. I also jumped out of my seat, which I haven't done so far this year, which sums it up more than anything.
What were your thoughts when the Knights scored with 60 seconds on the clock?
It was disappointing, because we had them contained and should have done a better job of it. We've set a goal to finish strong in all we do and that includes a set. But I knew whenever there's time on the clock, there's time to win the match.
What impressed you most about the boys' effort?
Our defence, apart from the last tackle. We made plenty of errors and had to scramble a lot in defence but the boys showed real resolve to come from behind several times and stay in the grind and the game.
Was it satisfying to get a nail-biting victory over your former club?
Oh yeah, I'd be lying if I said no. But it was a valuable two points as the competition is so close and it keeps us on top of the ladder with two other teams. It's like snakes and ladders and a loss can slide you down the ladder pretty quickly.
What does the side need to focus on to defeat the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night?
Just consistency. We can't go win, loss, win, loss, we've got to put some wins together and need to work on our error rate, because it's putting our defence under too much pressure. The Storm are very strong and last time we were at home we were disappointing and let the crowd down, so hopefully we can put in a better performance.
Which other young cubs should spectators keep a close eye on?
Young second-rower Bryce Cartwright. He's the nephew of Titans coach and former Panther John Cartwright..

Looks like they're doing well.

Jennings scoring tries

Impressions?

After a couple of lean years for our 20's its just good to have a competitive side again.

I don't know how many future first graders there are going to come out of this side, but there are probably two or three who have a chance.
