Knight savours sweet revenge
02 May, 2012 12:00 AM
IT WAS karma at its best. Ignored by the Newcastle Knights, Chris Knight was released from the club on Thursday and immediately relocated to the foot of the mountains. By Monday night, he'd kicked the winning field goal to seal the Panthers Toyota Cup side's thrilling 29-28 victory over — you got it — the Newcastle Knights. Justin Brady asks the questions. Toyota Cup coach Garth Brennan provides the answers.
So tell us about the rebirth and revenge of Chris Knight?
He's been in the Newcastle system all his life and he wasn't getting a game, so he rang me and said is there any chance I can come down and get a game of footy. Like a Hollywood movie, he kicked the field goal in the last five seconds to win the match. You couldn't write a script like that.
How elated was the side at full-time?
The boys showed more emotion than I've ever seen all year. I also jumped out of my seat, which I haven't done so far this year, which sums it up more than anything.
What were your thoughts when the Knights scored with 60 seconds on the clock?
It was disappointing, because we had them contained and should have done a better job of it. We've set a goal to finish strong in all we do and that includes a set. But I knew whenever there's time on the clock, there's time to win the match.
What impressed you most about the boys' effort?
Our defence, apart from the last tackle. We made plenty of errors and had to scramble a lot in defence but the boys showed real resolve to come from behind several times and stay in the grind and the game.
Was it satisfying to get a nail-biting victory over your former club?
Oh yeah, I'd be lying if I said no. But it was a valuable two points as the competition is so close and it keeps us on top of the ladder with two other teams. It's like snakes and ladders and a loss can slide you down the ladder pretty quickly.
What does the side need to focus on to defeat the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night?
Just consistency. We can't go win, loss, win, loss, we've got to put some wins together and need to work on our error rate, because it's putting our defence under too much pressure. The Storm are very strong and last time we were at home we were disappointing and let the crowd down, so hopefully we can put in a better performance.
Which other young cubs should spectators keep a close eye on?
Young second-rower Bryce Cartwright. He's the nephew of Titans coach and former Panther John Cartwright..
