For those who saw the game, based on tonight's performance, who would you have as halfback for round 1?

Bit hard to be concern when we don't even know what players the eels had on in the second half.

Hayne hoppa tonga semi toutai Kelly Norman peats mannah mau smith Paulo started. Sio Pauli sandow terepo gower came on as subs

Sandow looked a bit more dangerous but made a couple of errors. Kelly looked ok too. Neither stood out IMO

Few questions.

37 players used against 23? Guessing they rotated a number of players whereas the Eels played a reasonably set lineup in both halves?

Hopoate and Hayne playing first game of the season.

Did they have much game time with Peats, Norman, Kelly and Sandow?

What forwards played and were they rotated regularly?

So it was all Sandows fault then that Manly put so many points on us in the second half.... cool.
Thanks for the updates guys.

Thanks. Yeah that's the thing, Kelly provides stability but has FA points in him and Sandow is dangerous but prone to errors. I hope we go with the latter though. Seems like he is in a better head space this year.

By all accounts Haynes pass for tonga's try was not forward (what else is new with these refs..) so at 30-8 it may have gone differently

With out watching the game, I reckon the wingers of semi/toutai may have been defensively poor along with mau ( has never played NRl so it is all a learning experience). I reckon Paulo in the middle may have been a big issue to , he is pretty poor defensively most of the time. Pauli may have been a weak link to.

Also only two forwards on that bench one a rookie and peni meaning the forwards would have play some pretty big minutes which would have lead to some holes in the defensive line.

Not to concerned - boys / Arthur would have learnt a lot from the game

Did Manly seriously play 37 players?

If so, not surprising we fell away in the second half

You usually can see from trial form if there has been improvement. Waiting for an in depth report from the attendees.

Not giving an in depth report right now as I'm walking home drinking a bourbon but I commented straight after the match that we looked eerily similar to last year

Hoppa stars, Taufua hurt in Manly win

Date

Ben Horne

Manly are sweating on a shoulder injury to winger Jorge Taufua after they surged home to beat a Will Hopoate-inspired Parramatta 28-24 in their NRL trial on Saturday night.

It'd been 875 days since Hopoate last set foot on a rugby league field, but it took the Parramatta centre just two touches of the football to suggest he's ready to pick up where he left off in 2014.

Manly's stars came to the party in the second half, but it was the Sea Eagles who walked away with the biggest headache, after two-try Taufua was taken from the field clutching his left shoulder.

The powerhouse finisher was attempting to score his third for the match, but the try was disallowed for a forward pass and now he'll require scans on Monday.

In an otherwise quiet final hit-out, all eyes were on Hopoate in his return to the northern beaches.

Hopoate set up a try just two minutes after coming on in the second half, as the Eels showed early-season promise despite ultimately being run down.

After two years as a Mormon missionary, Hopoate's first outing with Parramatta was fittingly against the teammates he won a premiership with in 2011 prior to his break.

Hopoate's catch and pass for Vai Toutai to score and put Parramatta ahead 24-4 was silky, but it was his commitment to defence which was most impressive.

After 24 months out of the game at a key time in his athletic development, there were concerns about how long it might take the 21-year-old to physically adapt to the rigours of the NRL.

Parramatta named close to their best side for their final hit-out, with Luke Kelly set to start the season at halfback ahead of the enigmatic Chris Sandow.

The former Souths playmaker spent as much time at fullback as he did at No.7 but struggled to make his mark when given an opportunity.

Kelly set up a first-half try for backrower Ben Smith with a sharp short-ball, and his halves partner - Brisbane signing Corey Norman - also laid on a four-pointer for Israel Folau's little brother, John, as the Eels took a 20-4 halftime lead, before Manly's stars came out for the second.

After dropping the bomb which led to Toutai's try, Brett Stewart was a standout for the Sea Eagles.

Niggling knee problems hampered his year in 2013, but the signs are bright for the prince of Brookvale as he set up both of Taufua's tries and also pulled off a stunning try-saving tackle on runaway Eels winger Semi Radradra.

The media aren't going to give us anything worthwhile. They only care about the big names (ZOMFG Hopoate and Sandow!!!!)

That was the question I asked. The team list at the start stated they had a 37 man squad whereas we played 23.

Interesting that we had only two forwards on the bench in the second half and mostly younger guys in the starting lineup.

I am far from disappointed with the result. No injuries given who we already have is a plus. Early days and as usual I expect us to come out a little slow. I just hope we lose to the Warriors. We've beaten them first up the past three seasons I think and come up with nothing.

Close. Our past three coaches have had the Warriors first up (Anderson '09, Kearney '11, Stuart '13). The only one to lose was Anderson, and we made the top eight that year.
