UNE SG Ball Cup Premiers: Parramatta Eels

The Parramatta Eels are quietly confident of back-to-back titles in the Under 19s after an impressive finals run led them to last year’s 2023 premiership.

New coach Mitchell Lewis knows he has a squad of fighters on his hands.

That certainly showed in the Round One 32-20 win over a tough Warriors side, when the Eels were behind 10-8 at half-time.

With most of the squad transitioning from last year’s Harold Matthews team, Lewis put the young squad through a rigorous preseason.

“Tough to tell with the quality of competition this year but definitely confident in our chances this season,” Lewis said.

“I’m particularly confident in the depth of our squad.”

Lewis has named back rower Jezaiah Funa-Iuta and centre Devonte Vaivela as players to watch.

On the eve of the first game for 2024, Lewis reminded his players of a moment they would forever be a part of whatever the result.

“The first game against the Warriors will be a historic game with this being their first time playing SG Ball,” he said.

It'll be hard to go back to back when the best players won't be playing this grade. It was a big win yesterday as the sharks usually have a strong side and once again they were a few tries behind to finish strongly and get the win. But I'm unsure if they have the elite 19 year olds to win it.

It is time they made HM and SG ball a 3-week comp with a 4th week for finals and then a 5th week for GF (get it wrapped up by March) and then have more elite high school RL.

The worst SG Ball team would absolutely smash most high school teams.

True. But so what?
virtually nobody cares about NRL clubs reserve grade let alone under 17 team.
The HM and SG ball do almost nothing for the grass roots of the game.
The premier junior comp should be mainly about getting players into the sport.

If kids aren't in the game by 16-19 they will never be in the game, these competitions aren't trying to get 6-12 year olds involved in the sport.

How would transferring this competition to high school increase participation?

I loved the Commonwealth Bank Cup back in the day, and the idea of high school teams playing other high schools. But I've got a feeling that these days that more kids come to/play the game in the 12-18 years age groups through weekend footy, rather than high school comps?

And not all high schools have a league team anymore. If weekend footy feeds into rep selections in the form or HM or SG squads under the banner of the NRL club for their junior comp areas, then I'm guessing that's the best chance of a pathway for kids that might eventually have NRL potential.

I am not saying "transfer this comp" to high school.
I am saying 2 things:

1. they should think about making HM and SG ball a lot shorter season (like they use to be decades ago). The kids should spend less time with the NRL clubs.

2. The NRL should focus on high school comps.

High school games use to be huge. They would play them before NRL games and have then on free to air TV. Now they are buried on the internet somewhere.

I remember long after I was willing to give up my weekend for club sports I was still mad keen on trying to make my school rep teams and play / get face in school magazine for rep teams. Most lads would be the same or even more so now.

There is still a decent schoolboys knockout competition, and if the NRL had any real idea they should offer to compensate a tv network to put it on.

The NRL continue to say they want to see an expansion of junior footy, there’s an opportunity to get school footy exposure and it’s relatively simple with not I would think an over expensive investment.

Anyone know if Kai Wilson in the Harold Matts is from St George Dragons' Andrew Johns team from last year, a local or from somewhere else?

I can tell you that Kai Wilson goes to Kings and plays Rugby.

The Dragons Kai Wilson played 7 ? ^^ the Kings School boy is also a half.

Kai Wilson is picked on the bench for the eels ? However a rugby half plays a hooker role in league ?

Pure speculation here, but he’s from Kiama but maybe a border now at Kings on a rugby scholarship?
