If it turns out to be a success I hope all these clubs that have sat back with a wait and see attitude get overlooked when it comes to expansion time - especially Parra.

You hope that our club fails ? Hmmok yeah that would be awesome.

This sounds like a cowardly approach. Parra are a bunch of edge forwards.
I'd say its smart rather than cowardly.

That's a fantastic attitude to have!

I doubt it would happen though. Our brand is pretty powerful and I'm fairly confident that we wouldn't be overlooked in favour of the Harris Park Hornbags.

Are you seriously saying the Parramatta Eels Leagues club cannot afford $500k?

no

I am saying you have not sourced your allegation that we can afford to fund a women's NRL team after our 2 years of recent substantial losses

I'll take Bernie's word over yours

Talk about mixed messages from the NRL

One minute it’s “ We are capping your spending you can’t be trusted” Nek Minnitt “ Let’s have a woman’s comp with you clubs fitting the bill, everyone else is doing it, let’s be all inclusive it’s going to be hip and Rad”

Classic Toddles.

I think Pou got it right earlier the money is obviously there if we want it, we just don't give a damn about having a team in the WNRL. If that is the case lets just be honest about it.

Not that straightforward.

It is also possible that we only have enough money to spend on essential items. Having a team in the WNRL can be both important and non-essential.

Guys. Womens participation in sport is booming. It is easily the fastest growing sector of sports participation.

This is not just on the field but also the government funding of initiatives, schools and corporate support (anyone who has been to the cinema recently would have seen the awesome ads that NAB are doing for WAFL, they make me want to get a constructed vagina and play WAFL). There are also those Special K ads on TV for WAFL. There are probably a bunch of others that I can't stand watching.

AFL research has indicated that if you play a sport you are 6 times more likely to watch the sport on TV or attend a game. The games are on FOX and free to air, this means that there is a lot more exposure for the clubs sponsors.

The NRL gets it, they have seen what is going on whilst, as usual, the clubs have not (remember how late we were in relation to membership - thank god the NRL insisted in that area right).

Parramatta is arguably the biggest club in Sydney we should aim to be the biggest sporting club in Australia. We have to get in on this now.

So all that’s standing between us becoming the biggest club in Australia is participation in the WNRL?

Are you going to try and sell me some snake oil as well?

No - but this is an example of the kind of thing. A pretty good example.
All in good time.

You don’t go from basket case to number one club in Australia by rushing to get there.

Everything we do needs to be sustainable.

Parra isn't a basket case we are arguably the biggest football club in Sydney. To grow you have to have courage and vision and be a leader.

I like to think the NRL is going to keep working on Bernie.
Maybe the NRL just miscalculated and thought the clubs would get it and fall over themselves to sign up but now realise they have to actually explain the whole concept a little better.

The one thing you are not giving enough credence to is the decision by the PLC as owners of the PNRL to reduce/limit the recent drain of $$ needed to support the PNRL.

While it is nice to think the PLC is an unlimited money tree it isn't. Bernie said in his email that budgets had been set and sorted and the extra dollars were simply not available. Maybe this is just a financial decision.

I think maybe the way Bernie could pitch it to the Leagues club is
"the best way you can support grass roots rugby league/sport in the district is to grant us $500k right now for an WNRL team. That is going to be how you get the best bang for your buck at the grass roots level. It has come up now, admittedly a little faster than we had expected due to us seeing things elsewhere moving quickly, we need to get on the train now".

Mate, with all due respect. Bernie is a seasoned professional CEO and business executive. I think he probably knows how to pitch to his board/bosses for budgets and has either done this and not got the money or made his own determination that joining the WNRL in 2018 is not one of the priorities he needs to push at the moment.

The PNRL is a multi-faceted business as is the PLC and there can only be a certain number of things focussed on at any one time.

I do love the passion you are showing for us joining the WNRL early, but the decision has been made and although you may not like it, probably time to respect clubs decision.

I'm happy with our participation in Tarsha Gale and TBH think that the WNRL has got a bit of keeping up with the Jones smell about it bc Rugby, Cricket and AFL have their womens leagues.

I asked the qn above: we (eels) are getting aimed at for opting out (so far) of the WNRL, but are there enough quality players for an elite league or is the importance of an elite league of any skill level driving this ?

Seems to me that if there only enough players for 6 teams then just have 6 teams and let the numbers grow organically as girls progress through the Tarsha Gale system.

If we didn't have a Godzilla like competitor out there to grab the hearts and minds of the kids, women and men of the West, then sure the slowly, slowly, wait and see strategy may make some sense.

But all I see is we will continue to play catch up to the AFL in everything pertaining to the long term future success of our respective sports. WAFL is everywhere and continuing to grow its footprint as a thriving professional and successful sport in its own right. The AFL media machine and its acolytes have seen to that.

The NRL is already 3 steps behind the Women's version and 10 steps behind the mens in almost everything they do. With what is continuously going on at the ARLC, I can't see this ever changing and ultimately, 20-30 years down the track, not to many people will really care.

Remember what Hitler said. First you get the women, then the children and so will follow the the men.
