Eels' high expectations cost Anderson

Parramatta coach Daniel Anderson paid the price for overachieving in guiding the Eels to last year's NRL grand final with chief executive Paul Osborne admitting the sacked coach failed to deliver on high expectations.
Anderson had the final year of his contract terminated following an extraordinary meeting of the Eels board on Monday night, the club not satisfied with a 12th place finish after being installed as premiership favourites before a ball had been kicked.

"The thing you need to remember is that yeah we made the grand final last year but we recruited better, we had a better playing roster, and we finished 12th," Osborne said.

"I don't know that we were in the top eight more than three or four times and our form was poor and we didn't develop as well as we expected so unfortunately he paid the price. "There was an expectation."

Melbourne assistant and New Zealand Test coach Stephen Kearney, along with former Australian Test coach Ricky Stuart, are the leading candidates for the job.

"There's been a few people linked - obviously Kearney's someone that we'd like to have a talk to," Osborne said.
The Eels boss denied Kearney had the inside running thanks to a perceived relationship with Parramatta board member Glen Duncan.

Duncan is chief executive of Eels major sponsor Pirtek, who also sponsored the Kiwi Test side Kearney was in charge of during their triumphant 2008 World Cup campaign.

"Pirtek sponsored them in the World Cup but Glen met him once," Osborne said of the relationship.

The Eels were destabilised by talk over Anderson's future throughout their inconsistent 2010 campaign, with co-captain Nathan Hindmarsh seeking assurances from club officials last month that Anderson would be at the helm in 2011. He'll be around next year," Hindmarsh told reporters on August 28.

"I've been given that assurance from people within the club. He'd want to be here next year, put it that way."
But a review of the coaching operation ultimately put paid to Anderson, with the club forced to decide whether to commit to him long-term or head in a different direction.

Osborne admitted some of the players had taken the announcement hard. "Obviously he had a lot of support amongst the players - some are disappointed, others aren't." With two grand finals on his resume from six years of coaching in the NRL, it is likely rugby league fans haven't seen the last of Anderson.

Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith, who gave Anderson his break in coaching with a reserve grade role at Parramatta in 1999, was one who expected to come up against his former protege again.

"A career coach never likes to see anyone get the sack, it's a horrible thing," Smith said."But it's also real and it happens - been there done that.
"Daniel will come out the other side, it won't be the end of him, there are other people in the game that rate him really highly."

Storm chief executive Ron Gauci said he had yet to hear from Kearney, but said the club would not stand in his way should he seek a release from his commitment with the club.

"If Steve wants to come to us with a special request, he's been a very long and loyal servant to the club, we wouldn't want to hold him back if the circumstances were right," Gauci said.

"There's no question he'll be a successful senior coach at some time."

We were at least competitive under BS, we went backwards with a stronger roster under DA.

Send out a search party for our game plan and structure, then find a set move in the whole season. It was awful and I did not want another season like 2010, which was a disaster and I am getting too old hanging aroound and hoping for something top happen.

DA was damned if he did, damned if he didn't. If we adopted a structured style he would have been condemned for moving away from the Ad lib style that got us to the Grand Final last year. I don't blame him for persevering with the second phase play that we used so well last year, as we simply did not have a halves combination for 2010 capable of playing a structured game reliant on set plays.

Winning a few football games and this will be all forgotten.

While some on here disagree with others on directions of the club and the personalities involved. It's very sad and pathetic to see some people sink to the level of personal insults.

This!

I can't wait for 3P to go in April and Sangreal 86 with them.

The mentality of the 3p haters. You cannot just decide not to pay out a contract ffs!!!!!!!!!

What sort of club is it that will punt a board simply for punting an underperforming coach?

I cannot wait for the day when 3p delivers us that premiership, and watch you whinging f*ckwits complain. The club you want is a far different club that pulled itself out of the mire in 1975 and became stronger than any club since. The club you want is the club that slid back into the mire in 1987 and has - apart from a few brief periods of life - has largely stayed there.

F*ck that. I'd rather see them thrive.

......those of us who have contacts with payers and staff knew that action had to be taken.
And what of those of us that have similar contacts who have a differing view ?

Anderson was screwed, plain and simple. The board who promised so much and delivered so little needed a scapegoat, and they found one in DA. They're like first term politicians..... their main priority is a second term.

And however it came about, its a very convenient news cycle for them, isnt it........ all forgotten by about Thursday I reckon, given what else is going on this week.....

Ando came 12th with last years GF halves. They were good enough last year - what happened this year?
Simple actually, teams have simply got the measure over us, they've realised that they shouldn't be deluded into thinking that Robson and Mortimer can actually play properly. I wouldn't be surprised if teams last year actually thought that Morts short ass kicking game was something of a tactic, or that Robson would throw a crazy dummy and set someone up for a linebreak, gone are those days when teams are that delusional over our halves.
2010, everyone knows it now and our halves have been even worse for wear, I really can't blame the coach for the halves overall lack of ability to improve in any facet of play.
There's no doubt that DAs coaching has been somewhat sub-par, but you can't tell me after watching all 26 weeks of our footy this year that it was all the coach.
The board are absolutely kidding themselves if they think Kearney is going to step in and be our 2011 premiership winning saviour.

How is Ricky Stuart even in the running for our coaches job...What has he achieved since winning in 02 with Freddy as captain...This guy is a loser and i will be mighty pissed if he is chosen...As for 3P i voted them in but will not get my vote again...We need to find out who is leaking the info from the board to the daily telegraph, enough has not been done to stop it.

Wouldn't be so sure of that if I was you. Just because you feel that way does not mean the majority of eligible voters feel the same.

The majority of leagues club voters probably don't worry too much about the nrl side. My guess is most would be pokie players who mainly care about club facilities.
I'm glad to be a member of both leagues and football clubs.

Col? Who the f**k is Col? I like that you addressed my comments and concerns as a "CUSTOMER" of this club in such a sincere, caring, and honest way, and did so much to allay them...is it just a 3P thing to do nothing but have a go at those who disagree with you?

Bazal,

We haven't met in cyber world yet. My name is Col Green a.k.a "Parra Future". I think Terry (Sangreal86) had us confused.

Your a big man hiding behind a forum.

But to answer your in depth question, no there will not be a investigation on Daniel and you will find out about the reason well before the end of October.

If you were more astute, you would have noticed in my posts that the information coming at the end of October is coming from a Supreme Court hearing.

There we are dear, questions answered.... you can go back to your nuclear physics now.

You refer to the information coming out of the Supreme Court in October 2010.

Is this another case of the current board leaking information in which is not privy to all members? Why does this information find its way to yourself when you hold no position in the club?

Can you also reveal to us the source of your information as you clearly make aspersions about one current board member being a leak? Who is leaking confidential boardroom conversations and information to yourself?

No they don't. I'm a member of the football club but I still have to wait 2 years for voting rights as you need to be a member for 3 years, and frankly i'm not sure I want to the way our club is heading. And to have a say on the NRL level board you need to be a member of the leagues club for 3 years which not all football club members are.

you'll find a lot of member based organisations have a waiting period to vote and rightly so because otherwise it would be quite easy to stack elections any given year by just signing up a heap of members to vote.
