South and east stands getting closer to joining up. Should happen by end of January I think.

Went and had a look today for the first time in about 3 weeks. Got talking with a guy fixing up the security fences outside.

* He believes the roof frames on the southern end will begin to be erected in the next couple of weeks.

* A 400 tonne crane will be erected on the field to do this job. There's already 3 large cranes on site erecting the steel frame and concrete terraces for the south and east stands, and a tower crane on site providing materials for the western stand, which is being built more conventionally out of concrete.

* A lot of the structural steel has already been delivered and is laying on the field ready to be erected to join up the southern and eastern stands.

* The western stand is progressing quickly despite it's more complex build structure due to the amount of facilities incorporated. It's now at the first floor stage at it's northern end, and formwork has blocked visibility to the whole field area now at its southern end.

* The northern end (or a large majority of it) is also a predominantly concrete structure and is also progressing fast. Lower terraces are being formed up for concrete pours, and concourse areas mainly finished.

I think in the next 2-3 months we'll see a massive amount of change. There'll need to be I suppose. Govt want it finished in 15 months.

I'm guessing it has to do with there being more facilities in the Western stand.

Actually, I'm not guessing. I just read what Suity wrote.

This may be a stupid question, but why is one side being built with steel and the other side with concrete?

Concrete is required to allow the facilities required in that particular stand - corporate boxes, dressing rooms, medical rooms, media facilities, commentary boxes etc.

concrete has more structural integrity than steel and is better for spanning a greater load
