Oof...that's a long post for something you don't care about mate
Where to start...hopefully Suity doesn't get up us for derailing the thread (JOKES)
I am irreligious. But I also support people's right to a religion, so for me a prayer room isn't something that I have a single issue with. It literally doesn't affect me in any way and if it makes someone feel more comfortable in the stadium for whatever event then it's certainly not a bad thing.
Do you oppose catering to Chinese people, for example?
I haven't either. In fact tbh the people I do hear squealing about religious representation are normally Christians.
Tell me, would you have even known about them if not for the photo here?
Well if you want to have a theological debate about how much of Star Wars is based in existing religion, we have a Non Footy Chat thread where I'd be glad to do so.
Anyway, those other events mean that it's not just about using a prayer room during a footy game as you originally suggested. There are dozens of other events that will utilise the stadium. Do you not believe that Islamic workers have a right to pray during their shift if they want? Smokers can take 47 breaks but religious workers can't pray? Seems silly when put that way, yes?
Regardless, it's not relevant unless Star Wars becomes an official religion. You are trying to compare the second largest religion on earth to a series of half decent movies.
Personally I'd take much more offence to a stadium regularly playing Korn than to one that provides prayer rooms...no offence.
I will agree that you're being a bit of an areshole in comparing your preferences to something many people believe (rightly or wrongly) is a mandatory part of their lives.
It may be small, but it is growing. It's certainly larger than some other groups who are better represented.
Assimilation sounds awfully like One Nation nationalism mate. Have you never seen a Greek orthodox church? Should they just assimilate and use our existing churches?
Halal also has an animal cruelty element to it, though, so it's a different argument. Although yes, a lot of bigots certainly take exception for no reason other than it is an Islamic certification.
Kosher food hasn't got anywhere the same level of opposition.
No, I genuinely don't see why people struggle with it. It has literally no bearing on my life. If we are so giving, why not allow people to practice a religion that has literally no bearing on our lives?
And yes, i do believe that there is a high level of racism involved most of the time. Or at the very least xenophobia and/or jingoism
I'm not 100% sure what the point is here, but I would ask why you believe people would oppose something that doesn't affect them in any way if there wasn't some element of ignorance, racism, jingoism or perhaps xenophobia involved.
I think people use deflective arguments about "free speech" and "assimilation" to distract from one or more of these base factors.
I think you try to be too smart for everyone but I’m at the game supporting the Eels so i will reply later.
