No thanks. That would be tacky.
Why? Blue and Gold are great colours together and have been used in many different ways, even by Royalty.
There is nothing tacky about our colours when put together correctly. By correctly that generally means more blue and the gold as highlights so to speak.
Besides why isn't the Red and White of the Cities Trams considered tacky then or any other colour scheme chosen? Sure it's the Eels colours, so what? Embrace it man. Don't shy away from it. We need to make RL(NRL) all consuming, not be embarrassed by it.
We are a one city team. Make it the be all and end all and pride of the city ffs. This is the problem with the NRL and RL in general. We tend to downplay and minimise our product publically and almost at times feel shameful. Why? Other sports don't. Look at AFL, do you think that if they had the opportunity to associate one of their teams to a cities trams in some way they would feel it was "tacky"?
We need to grab every opportunity there is to expand the publics awareness of our product and make it known that we have presence and clout within the fabric of the community. This would be a great start for our team(club) for anyone who lives or visits our town to know who is boss and the that sporting buzz is us. The advertising during the season on each Tram would be priceless if we could add Eels ads on them to complement or other forms of advertising around the streets to match. It would really tell a story to everyone that this little city is all about the Eels and RL.
How could that be a bad thing for our club and sport? I would have thought as a long suffering RL fan that has on numerous occasions lamented that RL fans don't have the same fanaticism and passions as Soccer or other sports fans around the world you would see this as an opportunity to create something here in our own backyard. Sure it probably wouldn't on its own change much, but it is another brick in the wall of creating a strong legacy and association between Parramatta City, The Eels and all the people that live and breathe within it. Make the Eels the heart of the City. The one thing that the whole region is united on and lives for on a weekend. That should be the goal, shouldn't it?
If we could make the Trams our colours at the very least it shows that this town is in step with the team of the same name and the people of the area are glad and proud of that. So what is so tacky about that?
