You need to throw the welder into the back of the ute Suity.

Despite this being repaired by lunch time today, there are still delays on the T1, T2, T3 T8 and T9 this evening.
5 lines suffering delays. A 100 year old + system is continually failing, despite Jo's oft claimed "RRP" plan having now been continuing for well over 12 months.

Yet, when govt want to update and extend a more modern system, we end up with the following nonsense.....
It's time these dinosaur aresholes were reigned in.
What hasn't been stated is that not ONE ST's job will be lost with the conversion.
The union have every right to negotiate pay rises. That's fine. What they shouldn't do is hold NSW transport to ransom, inconvenience commuters and cost us taxpayers billions of extra dollars with their unreasonable demands and stupid strike action reasons.

Rail union to strike over Sydenham Metro line
Sydneysiders will once again be faced with rolling strikes on Sydney Trains, with the rail union protesting the Metro conversion of the Sydenham to Bankstown line.

Sydney’s train network will once again face rolling industrial action as the rail union announced it would fight against the Metro conversion of the Sydenham to Bankstown line.
In a notice sent to members yesterday the Rail, Tram and Bus Union said the new raft of industrial action was designed to force the Minns government to continue to run trains on the Bankstown line instead of converting it into a Metro. It will also be asking for higher wages.
“Forcing a genuine conversation about the Bankstown conversion – one that hits on the facts and isn’t manipulated by a distracting shiny new toy,” the statement said.
“At the core of these actions is ensuring that trains continue to run on the Bankstown Line and it is not closed as planned to deliver the Metro conversion.”
“Whilst we know that the Metro is the fad of the month, with the new City extension of the line being overwhelmingly welcomed by Sydney residents, we also know the conversion of the Bankstown line is a different beast.”

Western Sydney commuters have been warned by the NSW government to brace for a 12 month shutdown on the T3 train line between Sydenham to Bankstown as it is converted into a driverless Metro. Buses will be scheduled to run between the stations during the conversion process.

The RTBU will begin its suite of actions from midnight September 18, to continue indefinitely.
As part of the action union members will not work on any changed timetable and will be banned from doing any work on the Bankstown line if the section to be converted shuts. Signals will also not be cleared on the line if it shuts
Infrastructure workers will refuse to perform work on the lines if the temperature is higher than 30 degrees. There will also be a ban on removing dead animals from the tracks and training new trainees for the rail operations centre.
The RTBU has consistently opposed the introduction of the Metro network given they have driverless trains.

Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said the government was currently assessing the impact of the union strikes on commuters.
NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said the government was currently assessing the impact of the proposed bans to work out how to mitigate the impacts on passengers and infrastructure projects.
“The benefits of metro should not be reserved for the communities north of the Sydney Harbour Bridge,” she said.
“People in the communities of Canterbury Bankstown deserve a turn up and go service too.”

Opposition leader Mark Speakman said inaction from Premier Chris Minns and Ms Haylen were to blame for the strikes.
Opposition leader Mark Speakman said Ms Haylen and Premier Chris Minns were partly to blame for the new round of industrial action as they refused to bring the unions under control.
“Chris Minns and Jo Haylen are letting the RTBU dictate terms while they sit on their hands,” he said.
“This isn’t about improving conditions – it’s about union power, and Premier Minns is too weak and beholden to the unions to take control.
“The people of New South Wales are being used as pawns in a union power grab, and Minns is just watching it happen.”

Meanwhile, the Sydney trains system is in meltdown again this morning. 4th time in 7 days.
That cracked track would be down to a lack of maintenance (or maintenance budget) over the last say 15 years... but of course, must be Labor's fault, given they've been in charge for two 18-month stints of that entire period 😂.

Or I know, it must be the union's fault instead...
🤣

I went nerdy this AM and checked out Gadigal from Bathurst St entrance. Nice.

I am ready for the entire Sydney network to go underground using this template. Sell off the land above to developers and <I have no idea> it might pay for itself or half.

Get it done.

Forgive my ignorance - but other than plan to more regularly replace the metal in the most trafficking rails nearCentral, perhaps?

generally, where an item is subject to metal fatigue it would be x-rayed or scanned at regulated intervals, that was a significant crack

I have no idea how they maintain their railway lines but I'd say that probably should have been picked up before it got to that stage

We have rail vehicles that x-ray the rails. Lines have to be closed for that to happen.
These vehicles identify potential problems and then trackwork repairs are planned and ultimately put into place.
As you say, that was a significant failure and I too am surprised that it wasn't identified earlier and before it failed.

Above is the latest press release from the RTBU.
Lets for one minute, decipher this statement and some of their "supposed" claims.

For a start, some of their claims are not only disingenuous, but also blatantly and completely dishonest.

- The line does not suffer from over-crowding due to the lack of high density housing along its path in a city that is suffering from a housing crisis. Therefore, it is not performing as well as it could. A "sound service" is not good enough.
- The claim of safety is a laugh. Claiming that the metro will run alongside a freight line is no different to what the existing ST's line does, yet the metro is only taking over the existing line, yet is also separated by security fences to make it even more safe.
- Their claim that converting the line to metro raises "safety, security, accessibility and other concerns" is just BS. Metro as a system is as safe as any. Why did they not mention that just last month two people were killed on the Bankstown line when a pram with two children fell onto the tracks and the father attempted to rescue them, ultimately paying with his own life. This would not have happened with a metro and platform screen doors. Why did they also not mention that a guard fell out of a train not long ago, and that there have been 3 other deaths this year on the ST's system. Yet, the RTBU question the safety of Metro lines. Lol.

The next longer paragraph in that statement is just laughable. Seriously, who wrote this? Alex himself?

- The conversion of the Bankstown Line is actually going to free up so much more capacity on the Sydney Trains system on the T2 and T8 lines. It takes the T3 line out of the City Circle, and actually gives T3 line commuters a faster trip to the city than they previously had. Already, even before the T3 line closure, there is a massive amount of commuters transferring to Metro at Sydenham from the Bankstown Line.

- The next part of the statement. "An inquiry held by the upper house..... Lol! The Minns govt when they came to govt actually instigated their own independent inquiry and that inquiry recommended that the Bankstown conversion went ahead, and the Minns govt has gone with that. Well done Minns govt. Another lie in this statement from the RTBU.
- What the RTBU aren't saying is that not ONE job from Sydney Train's will be lost due to this conversion. What they are also ignoring is that this will actually improve the ST's performance by opening up extra slots through the city for other lines so subsequently, improving their own performance with more services on these lines. All they are worried about is beholding the whole system back in the 20th century.

I took my 92 yo mum on the metro on Sunday and showed her the new stations through the city and at Central. She was blown away by what she saw and it was an absolute breeze getting her on and of the metro and the 4 other stations we visited, even with her walker.

I want to see the Minns govt hold this mob to account and stand up to their bullshit. The RTBU are going to do everything they can to cancel the Bankstown shutdown. The reasons they have given in their statement are crap. They are only holding the Labor govt to account on the Metro because of their greedy 27% wage rise claims.
They should be going the same way as the CBMEU.

tl,dr?
f**k the RTBU. They are attempting to hold back this city for their own greed.

Indeed and agree.

I think it's been reported that rail maintenance budgets have been cut over the previous decade and a half or so, while money was spent pursuing other shinier transport priorities...

So would the Minns government standing up to RTBU bullshit take the form of simply proceeding with the Bankstown line shutdown/conversion to metro as currently planned?

I haven't seen any government statements indicating potential deviation from current plans and timeframes.

Stand up to the pricks, otherwise, where will it end ?
Interesting as the mantra was, elect Labor and strikes will disappear given the relationship between unions/ Labor, never seems to be the case. One sector gets a pay rise as a reward , the rest then seek more and off the table goes cooperation.

Have you got a link for this mantra ?

There always has and always will be union argy bargy.

Ten days ago Minns announced details of the shutdown of T3, so it's happening. RTBU can make a lot of noise so their rank and file think they are doing a good job, but's happening anyway.
