The fact that it's over budget and over time is typical of today's infrastructure environment. That's the disappointing part of all of this, and nobody is ever held accountable.

That shite happens and it is disappointing to say the least but sometimes, it's inevitable.
I'm building retaining walls at a house atm. I made it clear in my quote that if we strike rock while digging the pier holes for the posts, it will be a variation to core drill the holes for the supporting posts.
Well, out of the 12 holes that we have hand dug, there were 5 where we hit rock and have to core drill to get them to a depth that I am happy with to support the posts and to do the job to structural expectations. I don't want to be returning to the job to fix a failed wall.
This stuff happens all the time.
I'd be held accountable if I didn't build the wall properly.
Hence, the extra cost to my client unfortunately. It happens.
The same shit happens on a much larger scale in larger infrastructure projects. That's why costs blow out.

I understand all that but I'm a crusty old fart who enjoys a good whinge every now and then. More often now.

Its public works, they always come in late and over budget. Being late allows them to claim extensions of time, hence more overheads and on costs and it all gets approved. There are people such as engineers and project managers that cant get a job in private enterprise so they work for Public Works and they are not too flash.

I've done heaps of work with them and have many stories to tell. There is not one person accountable, its basically the whole depertment.

The average merkin only wants to see accountability. Case in point. You know as well as I do that the Brisbane Olympics will go well over budget and be pumped to get things finished by the time 2032 comes around. So far we've had almost 160 days of reviews shared by both sides of government just to get where we are now. Nobody or their department will be held accountable for anything apart from a bunch of media clickbait stories.

That's a financial disaster waiting to happen.

They have had 3 and half years and still no decision has been made.

How many feasibility studies, reviews and designs have been done up which have cost millions already to get duck egg

you only have to watch Grand Designs to see how many smaller scale projects end up on time and on budget

Tell me. Did you ever buy a ticket in the Opera House Lottery?
not that old

From wiki

The Opera House was formally completed in 1973, having cost $102 million.[54] H.R. "Sam" Hoare, the Hornibrook director in charge of the project, provided the following approximations in 1973: Stage I: podium Civil & Civic Pty Ltd approximately $5.5m. Stage II: roof shells M.R. Hornibrook (NSW) Pty Ltd approximately $12.5m. Stage III: completion The Hornibrook Group $56.5m. Separate contracts: stage equipment, stage lighting and organ $9.0m. Fees and other costs: $16.5m.

The original cost and scheduling estimates in 1957 projected a cost of £3,500,000 ($7 million) and completion date of 26 January 1963 (Australia Day).[38] In reality, the project was completed ten years late and 1,357% over budget in real terms.

Can't see how it will be a major tourist pull myself...

I can't think of one overseas city where my top ten itinerary choices would have included a fish market? So hope they haven't over-factored tourist spend into their financial modelling

The shitty one they have now has busloads of tourists drop them off there every single day. Usually Asian tourists.
They f**ken love it!

It's ok mate. It certainly won't be a white elephant.
The new Fish Market will absolutely be a Sydney Icon, despite what some think on here.
Not only for the new and improved spaces, but also the actual architecture of the building and the restaurants that will be there.
The current place is not very pleasant and is old. The new place will be amazing.
Here's a pic looking from the old, to the new.

I drive over the Anzac Bridge a few times a week and have seen this getting built from day 1.
Impressive looking building. I do wonder what the parking situation is going to be like there.

Has there been any word about what is going to happen to the old fish market site? I'm assuming apartment blocks.

I believe the old site will be replaced with over 1000 apartments combined with commercial businesses, similar to what's currently being developed at Darling Harbour.
