A ROUGH WEEK FOR ...

NEWCASTLE Knights players had several layers of skin peeled from them this week by coach Wayne Bennett.

Bennett attacked the comfort players, those Newcastle mainstays that have grown fat in the comfort zone of moderate success, not winning but not really losing, and who seem content with that because they know their Newcastle bloodlines grant them some kind of immunity from being moved on. It was long overdue.

Perhaps if he said it when he got here and not when he is leaving, we wouldn't have had half the issues we've had in the last 3 years.

Does Stone have the stones to actually make the tough calls and make an example of a sacred cow?

If Stone is appointed head coach he can follow one of two paths: be a sympathetic ear to these comfortable players and forever be in their/the team's grace, or actually do something about this culture and be very unpopular for the entirety of his tenure.

Unfortunately, I can only see one outcome here and Harragon and Midley would only ever appoint Stone fully well knowing this. It would be the reason why Bennett is lukewarm about Stone and endorsing an outside influence like Matterson.

But as you said Nuffy, why is this only being raised now by Bennett. It's 3 years too late.

Bennett has said what we have thought for years. Time to usher in a new generation and be bold. Give Stone two years and no chance of extension unless we make the 8 in 2016.

3 years too late if true.

This has been going on for years.

I don't see much in Matterson's coaching record to get excited about but if a bloke like him can get some of the blokes to pull their fingers out and kill the horrid f**king culture in the joint then so be it.

Unfortunately no

I can see it now. We'll be bringing B Smith back in two years to clear out the locals responsible for the shit culture again.

What gives me the shits is that we shouldn't need a coach to have to rip strips off them and tell them not to accept mediocrecy. They're f**king progressional athletes. It's the same shit over and over with these blokes.

And the question needs to be asked, if Bennett felt this, why the hell did he bring Newton back to the club? The guy epitomises all that is wrong with the club. Once again, Bennett needs to accept responsibility for the club's current predicament and stop trying to pass the buck.

To be fair, this is just the first time Bennett has said it publically...

He may have been fighting this the entire time he was there but felt it was better to put up a united front for the public.

Exactly. The guy is a hypocrit. Needed to be said at the start of his tenure. Far too late now.

If he's felt that way before then why retain those players? Like I said every guy in the squad is there by Bennett's choice

Really, Stone only has one choice if he wants a long career as a FG coach. He needs to shake the place up otherwise it will sink him and he'll be a 50 yr old professional coach that is unemployable.

Though you made reference of it how you can actually give Bennett the slightest bit of praise for something that should have been done 3 years ago is
