October 15, 2009 10:04am FORMER NRL premiership player Paul Whatuira is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation in a UK hospital after being arrested on assault charges.
Whatuira, who played for NRL teams Melbourne Storm, Penrith Panthers and Wests Tigers, was arrested on Tuesday in Huddersfield following a “bizarre sequence of events”, according to NZ website stuff.co.nz.
The incident left two men with serious facial injuries.
Whatuira is living in the UK and contracted with Huddersfield Giants in the Super League, where he has enjoyed success as the league’s top try-scorer and coaches player of the year.
He represented New Zealand 10 times between 2004 and 2006.
