Broncos behemoth Payne Haas has been stood down by Brisbane and fined $10,000 for refusing to cooperate with an NRL integrity unit investigation in the latest scandal to hit rugby league.

The Courier-Mail reported on Tuesday night that Haas wil miss the start of the 2019 NRL season due to his role in two off-field incidents that involve family members.

Haas is set to miss between two and four premiership matches, the paper says, adding that the NRL integrity unit has rubber-stamped the Broncos’ stunning decision to suspend him.

Brisbane will play their season-opener against the Melbourne Storm on March 14 and follow up with a Round 2 derby with the North Queensland Cowboys on March 22.

The move by the Broncos officials to stand down Haas comes after the NRL has been hit by a disastrous off-season following off-field dramas involving Jack de Belin, Ben Barba, Jarryd Hayne and Dyland Napa among others.

Haas had made a successful return from shoulder surgery as the Broncos beat Souths Logan 42-0 in a trial in Warwick on Saturday night. He was named on Tuesday in Brisbane’s squad for their second pre-season hitout against Wynum Manly, but he may now sit out the match.

Broncos chief executive Paul White is expected to front a press conference and reveal the exact reason why the 19-year-old Haas could sit out the first month of the season.

The Courier-Mail says Haas “became embroiled in twin off-field incidents involving violence between September and November last year”

One is allegedly a personal dispute involving family members while the other relates to a brawl at a Queensland Rugby League semi-final last year that involved his brother and sisters.

While Haas was not directly involved in the brawl, he was purportedly in close quarters to it.

The NRL reported the matter to the NRL integrity unit after receiving several complaints about the incident. When the unit’s officers attempted to talk to Haas, he refused to comply — forcing the Broncos to sanction the 117kg prop for failing to adhere to the club’s values and behavioural standards.

In light of other matters that have surfaced over the off season, this must be the most serious if he has been stood down by the club.

Smack dat Haas. Bravo young man, you’ve fought the law and you won.

I love this strategy. All players need to adopt this for the Integrity Unit. Stab a dude? Refuse to talk and cop four weeks. Run over a granny? Refuse to talk and cop four weeks. Deal some coke? Refuse to talk and cop four weeks. Accidentally play with a hang nail, talk and cop 6 months.
