*PBL MEDIA AGREES TO BUY CHANNEL NINE PERTH FOR A$136.4 MLN

Only a news headline for now.

Can only be good for getting NRL on before 3am.

they would still show it late at night like after 11pm

Exactly right. It'll be no different there than what it is in Melbourne in regards to the ridiculous times they show it

Any other channel and I'd be jumping for joy. Given's Ch9's treatment of RL generally and especially in Victoria I hold out no great hope that things will change at all!

At least it removes one of the major impediments to Rugby League being shown at a more decent timeslot in Perth. (Even if it just replaces it with another similarly imovable impediment - Eddie McGuire)

While I don't hold out much hope that the move will see live NRL in Perth, maybe a start could see a similar schedule to Melbourne, with NRL matches at say 10:30pm rather then 3:30am

What is does mean is that the league is now directly contracted with the owner of Channel Nein Perth. That may or may not help us during the period of the current contract but it'll certainly allow us to demand certain conditions be met in regards to coverage in Perth if we grant Channel Nein the next contract. Of course dictating such terms will be a lot easier if we have an open bidding process and multiple suitors scrambling to please.

I understand people are still hesitant about this but it has to be better for rugby league than nine perth having seperate owners when the reds get back in.

This sale will be a positive for the WA Reds IMO. PBL will be very supportive of the WARL's bid for a team to join the NRL in 2011-2012. A WA team will give Channel 9 a greater return on the investment of purchasing the NRL's media rights.

A Perth NRL team = Greater interest in the comp & game = higher ratings = Happy PBL

Why is it Channel Nine's responsibility to show league at times when their purpose is ratings. It is Gallop and his cronies who should ensure that a contract is signed that is in the interests of the game and it's growth, similar to how the AFL is run. However we are ruled by an organisation who's agenda is selling Pay TV subscriptions what hope do we have.

The best hope is live or near live broadcast of the Channel 9 Sunday afternoon game into Perth. It would be a cheap prgram to put on and the ratings wouldn't matter too much.

Because by being a partner with the league in building the game, they increase the return from one of their most expensive investments. This is something that Seven worked out 20 years ago when they showed live afternoon AFL games into Sydney and Brisbane every week. We still can't even get that out of Nein. If you're paying as much as these networks pay for these sports, you don't hide it from half your potential audience, you don't delay showcase finals matches, you don't put the product up to ridicule every Thursday night, and you don't constantly harp on negative points in commentary. Nein just don't get it. They've always used and abused the game for every cent they could squeeze rather than helping to build the game and reaping the ratings benefit of being part of that increased success.

It's simply fixed the NRL make it part of the deal. The NRL are the one's responsible for letting Nine and Fox get away with doing whatever they want without demanding anything in return. The NRL, FFS, are the one's telling us we are an esat coast sport. I want to see what plans they have for growth. There's nothing, and if there is something why the big secret?????????????????????????????????????

If and when the Reds get back in PBLs purchase of Nine Perth will be beneficial but I can see them treating league with the same disregard there as in Melbourne. At best they might get the Grand FInal live and thats about it....

Interestingly re demand when they showed one of the SOO games here at 10pm last year I heard a number of guys (all die hard AFL fans) talking about the game the next day. Perth people will generally get behind a Perth team and as most are sports fans they will tune into the big games. I can't believe Ch9 can't set aside 3 wednesday nights out of 52 to show SOO live!

Here is an article from Crikey.com

PBL Media offers to buy Nine Perth

Glenn Dyer writes:

James Packer's PBL Media has made its first move since it was established at the start of this month with CVC Asia, offering to buy the Nine Network station in Perth from Sunraysia TV for $136 million.
Sunraysia TV, which operates STW 9 (Swan Television Western Australia), asked for a trading halt before the market opened this morning and then PBL Media revealed its hand a little later in a deal that has been speculated upon for the past two months.
PBL media will do the deal by buying the operating subsidiary, licence and assets from Sunraysia, which is controlled by the chairman, Eva Presser and associated interests. Bruce Gordon's WIN regional Media group is a significant minority shareholder with almost 44 per cent, but has no power.
Sunraysia proposes a two stage buyback of all shares in STV using the PBL Media money. The shares were trading around $13.50 yesterday with a market capitalisation of $154 million.
Presser justified the deal by saying:
Putting Swan TV together with Nine Network will provide improved programming for our viewers, improved ratings for our advertisers and operating benefits for the business.
In today's new media landscape, one needs the critical mass to meet the demands of a highly competitive local and national media market.
The Nine Network can provide this whereas a standalone independent can not. The sale also provides an opportunity for Sunraysia to realise value on its investment.
STW 9 has underperformed for years and Presser hasn't been interested in selling, especially to Gordon and WIN which has made at least one recent approach.
But it does raise the question why? Nine and Sunraysia have been negotiating a new affiliate agreement without any success for months now without success. PBL and Southern Cross settled a new agreement for NWS-9 in Adelaide last year (the agreements were needed after the loss of the AFL broadcast contract by Nine).
Nine and PBL controlled the network but for some reason couldn't get Perth to lift its game: a sign of managerial weakness. So it would seem they have decided its cheaper to spend some of the $4.5 billion raised in the CVC deal.
The company said completion of the sale under the Share Purchase Agreement is subject to a number of conditions with the key condition being that the shareholders of Sunraysia approve the sale under Chapter 11 of the ASX Listing Rules, as Swan TV is the main undertaking of Sunraysia.
The proposal will be put to shareholders at a general meeting to be convened by Sunraysia in late March/early April 2007. Sunraysia says it has agreed to a break fee of $1.3 million, which is a bit outrageous as there will not be an overbidder: PBL Media controls the Nine Network and no one else would think of trying to upset the deal because it would need the approval of PBL Media and James Packer!
Sunraysia proposes to offer to buy-back all the shares "to distribute the proceeds of the sale." In reality that's a takeout offer for WIN and Gordon. They would feel they are entitled to 44% of the $136 million, or around $59 million, which would give a nice profit on the holding.
But not all the $136 million will be paid straight away: $5 million of the purchase price payable will be held in a warranty escrow account until 30 September 2008 and $10 million in a tax escrow account until 30 June 2012, or an earlier date during calendar year 2007 with the agreement of PBL Media.
The purpose of the escrow accounts is to reserve, for a period, funds for any agreed claims by PBL Media for a breach by Sunraysia of warranties under the Share Purchase Agreement.
As a consequence of this delayed release of the full purchase price to Sunraysia, shareholders who accept the buy-back offer will receive payment in two or more instalments.
The first instalment will be paid shortly after the close of the buy-back and the subsequent instalments (if any) will be paid as soon as practicable following release of the escrowed funds.
The value of the follow-on instalments will depend on the balance of the escrow account.

****

Rest assured the worst case scenario,at least the NRL G/F will be shown live into WA.It is amajor event, even eddue realises this and James Packer is league indoctrinated.
I don't know about the othert games, but it can't be worse than the current debacle in Perth.
Finally when the TV ratings for G/F are out,we might get a realistic comparison with Vic fumbleball G/F ratings.ATM we comapre a delay in the haunting hours for the NRL G?F in Perth.
