PC Gaming Recorder?

Anyone know a good one? I tried FRAPS last night. It worked well below par for what I was expecting. I was sitting there and recorded 20 seconds of gaming footage that was HALF the original game size (smallest I could make it) and it turned out to be 560mb... 20 SECONDS OF FOOTAGE! Anyone know a program I can use that would be say... 1/100th of that size for 20 seconds? Quality doesn't have to be HD (obviously) but preferably clear!

I don't have any suggestions but I can help you with Fraps.

If you download a program called VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/download.html ... REALLY easy to use) and open the video file up in that, you can use filters to change the size of it (like make the dimensions smaller than Fraps has recorded the video) and also to compress it with xVid codecs which reduces the file size.

Example:

I just recorded an 11 second youtube clip with Fraps, came out at 70.6mb.

Used the "resize" filter in VirtualDub to make it 50% smaller (from 960x540 to 480x270) then used compression > Xvid with a target quantizer (quality setting) of 6 (1 being highest quality, 31 being lowest)

Go to save, file is now 4.13mb.

As above. You just need to play around with the settings to find what you want in VDub. If you look around I'm sure you will find tutes to get you where you want to be, plenty of people make their clips this way.

Oh video conversion and resizing isn't a problem, the problem is when I play the game, I'd have this thing chewing up my disk space rapidly. I want to reduce that, just have it stay a low size rather than be a space hog. That's why I'm after a completely new program.

I think with most screen capturing programs you're going to have that issue, because it's recording raw video completely uncompressed. I'm not aware of any that will compress on the fly, it would be cool but I don't know of any.

Have a go at ZD soft. I tried it out yesterday. The file sizes weren't that big, it even captured sound, and there was little-no lagging whilst playing the game. There was only 1 slight problem... NO VIDEO of the ingame actually appeared. The screen turned black when the game loaded and that's all you could see (playback I'm talking here). you could hear all the sounds from the game, but no video. If you want to try it yourself and see what needs to be done, be my guest! In fact I'd like to know how this problem could be resolved.

*Yesterday I sent messages to some Youtube users regarding the in-game videos they uploaded. Here are the responses:

Re: PC Games Recording Software

In the Art Of Murder Walkthrough I made I used to record the game with WeGame and to edit with Sony Vegas 7.
When I recorded the walkthrough WeGame was free and I think it still is.
Wegame is a game recorder client.
Re:Video Games Recorder

i use fraps..
after record i put the huge file(2GB or more for 3 min record) and i put this file in windows movie maker and save it again from movie maker..
they quality will be the same but file size will be 20MB+-...
then you can upload it without any problem :)

Using Fraps 3.4.5 - Half size, 30 Frames/second. I needed to play around with audio properties in order to get it to record sound, but it ended up getting it working. The good thing is it doesn't lag the game either, plus there is a hot key to start/stop recording that actually works. It's pretty good. I might stick with this one.
