I've heard Peanut Butter is a source of energy that can be burnt faster.

Is this true? If so explain how?

My friend has been going on and on about it and I'm unsure whether to trust him or not.

Without going into it. Fats can be used as your primary source of energy (Keto diet). I'm too lazy to post an in depth response at the moment but I will later tonight.

NATURAL peanut butter is great while following a keto diet.

The keto diet is a high fat, moderate protein and extremely low carbohydrate diet, where the brain uses ketone bodies (fats) instead of carbs to fuel the body. When in ketosis the brain uses the fats ingested as its primary energy source sparing the protein ingested allowing this to go towards muscle growth/repair. Remember it takes 3-4 days to get into a strong ketosis so patience is needed.

To enter into ketosis the macronutrients levels that should be ingested are as follows 1.5g of protein per lb of bodyweight, 0.5g of fat per lb, and whatever residual trace carbohydrates are eaten.

Food sources:

Protein Sources
§ Chicken
§ Beef
§ Fish
§ Eggs
§ Bacon
§ Pork
§ Lamb
§ Mince
§ Hamburger Patties

Fats
§ Butter
§ Cheese
§ Extra Virgin Olive Oil
§ Macadamia Oil
§ Coconut
§ Brazil Nuts
§ Almonds
§ Walnuts
§ Macadamias
§ Natural Peanut Butter

Vegetables
§ Green Beans
§ Broccoli
§ Baby Spinach
§ Lettuce
§ Celery
§ Avocado
§ Asparagus
§ Watercress
§ Spring Onions
§ Mushrooms

The keto diet can be an extremely effective fat burner as long as you consume under your maintenance levels. It's also effective in retaining muscle while cutting

It's a really unhealthy diet.
Bacon and eggs feels good for a few days, but after a week or so you'd rather starve than eat it - which i thought i'd never say.
I lost weight on a similar diet 20 years ago, but felt like sh*t the whole time and put the weight straight back on.

I dont agree ^

The physical results can be outstanding. As long as your eating mostly good fats and eating under maintenance levels. I know a few athletes and bodybuilders who eat this way.

I just don't find it easy to stick to as your limited to under 20g of carbs per day in order to remain in ketosis. Which sounds easy but unless you are prepared it limits your meal options

20g of carbs!!

Man, I'd struggle with that.

I'll stick with the whole eating healthy foods and exercising thing for a while.

Only eating < 20g of carbs would really limit your vegetable/fruit intake a that would lead to nutrient deficentcy. Bad news for your organs

The diet lacks fibre, water soluable vitamins, and is very heavy on saturated fats however you look at it - and it also should be noted that being in ketosis for long periods is not healthy all by itself. Ketones are toxic substances that need to be eliminated from your system, and make you feel unwell while they are in your system, not to mention they do damage to kidneys etc.

The fibre sources are from predominantly vegetables and/or nuts.

You can practically eat as much green vegetables as you like and it won't affect ketosis. Fibre doesnt count

In regards to water soluable vitamins you cover most b-complex vitamins through your meat sources. The rest are covered with vegetables. The only one that's a concern from memory is riboflavin. Anyway I would recommend taking vitamin supplements regardless of the diet.

I think this diet has its place and as a (short term 10-12 week) measure can work wonders for ones physique if controlled properly. As for general health I agree with you that it isn't the greatest for you although I would argue it would be better than the average diet (high carb, high sat fat, low protein). You already mentioned kidney function and the other concern I have with the keto diet is increased cholesterol levels.

Oh good lord we haven't got a low carbs/high protein apologist in here have we?
It's not a realistically sustainable diet and you BINGE!
Not to mention what it does to your insides and your bone density.
