Penrith comments

I wouldn't be too harsh on Lawrence, he was shifted to the back row. He did better there than Bleh did.

The scoreline is nothing but a reflection of how bad penrith are.

We would have lost against every other team in the comp yesterday. Luke Lewis should have been man of the match, he outperformed everyone.

Woods and Ryan again our best. Moltzen better, I thought rowdy went ok compared to previous weeks, aysford was out of position as well to accommidate Reddy.

Tuqiri was f**king woeful.

Fulton again looked after Farah's defence workload. Galloway better.

In saying all this, the way the team played yesterday would have been deemed a bad game last year. Its now being heralded as our best this year in 7 outings.

Thats how bad we are. 2 points is good, but by no means are we in top 8 form, let alone premiership contenders.

My God you're depressing. Yes the Panthers were awful but we still dominated them. To say that we would have lost to any other team in the comp yesterday is ridiculous.

It was a massively improved effort. Woods was unbelievable, Moors was good. It looks like we've definitely scored getting Cashmere, he looked great. Moltzen was good at the back. Rowdy is still struggling and yes I agree Tuqiri doesn't look up to it.

But try looking at things positively once in a while, it makes life more enjoyable.

Guys - we won.

Thats the most important thing.

And we were hardly going top play impressively given our opposition.

Its better to win ugly than to lose well -

We lost a couple ugly this year - lost a couple well and now we won one ugly.

Lets give the guys a little credit - its 2 pts regardless.

We would've beaten a lot of teams yesterday. Good to see Marshall closing out each half and kicking for the corners to allow us to control games at crucial times.

Woods could play SOO this year. This kid has an immense future.

It's not ridiculous, its an obvious fact. Nice of you to avoid all the areas where I mentioned poisitives though, just to suit your distorted view of my post.

I didn't suggest it wasn't. But I did intimate that its still not good enough and we have a lot more improvement left to do.

Don't try and tell me how to live my life. I prefer to look at things realistically, not in a distorted fairy land where I believe that everything is fine, ignoring the glaringly obvious side of things that clearly arent't good at all.

Ignoring the negative doesn't solve those issues.

I thought Matt Bell was solid for your mob. Hard to tell with our understrength pack but I thought in general you were pretty solid in the middle third.

He's been playing like that all season, just like he was last year whenever I saw him for you guys. Good fourth or fifth choice prop in rotation who always does his job, works hard, knows his limitations and doesn't let anybody down.

I accept the opposition allowed us to control the game yesterday but aside from some individual players not playing to their best, as a team effort I was pretty happy in that there was a level of structure to most of the plays.

We didn't do the usual 'must score on every play' even with an opposition in disarray. We seemed to build some pressure and kick to the corners and at the right time (generally anyway). The go forward of Woods just shows he was certainly the right one to keep.

Overall I am happy to build on that win. If we carry that form over the next few rounds when we come up against some of the other teams struggling ie. Parra and Titans we could be on the tail of the top 8 by round 12 or so.

I don't have a distorted view of your post but there is a difference between being realistic and being overly negative. If you look hard enough you'll find a negative in any win we've ever had. I'd rather lap up a 30 nil win and be happy we've finally kept a team to zip.

It's not about living in fairy land, No one has been happy with our start to the year, but I was happy with yesterday's performance and I think if we play to that level consistently and gradually get better we'll win a lot more than we lose.

Yeah . . .Bell single-handedly shut down 3 or 4 of Penrith's attacking raids with solid and effective tackles.
Humble was good. So were Moltzen, benji, Beau,Keef, Reddy, Moors, Blair and Liam.
As others have said . . . Woods was a standout.
The cashman will be a great boost for our pack.

Wasn't it nice to turn up to work on Monday without getting the usual stir from your "mates" ? :D

I think Benji played his most mature game in a very long time.

He still did his usual flashy stuff, but his fifth tackle kicking to the corners and also grubbering it out was great.

This is what we need from him.

Control!

Like many i was critical of Moltzen effort against the Broncos, and the flack he received was deserved, but this week i think he made amends. If there is one negative at times he still seems hesitant to return the balls from kicks, preferring to off load to his wingers.Maybe swapping Lote to fullback when defending would be a better option for WT in defusing the oppositions kicks.

It was quite noticeable Benji did play within himself or in a more mature way that did benefit our team and hopefully this will continue,it was also noticeable that the piggy back penalties that we have been conceding were addressed by the team.

Typically you can get it from the NRL site.

Ha! Yeah, I was just being impatient... Having to work on a Sunday afternoon when I'd normally be watching the footy was a bit of a new experience for me.

I'd prefer just to get Moltzen out of the fullback position. He's had three years to make decent fist of it and he fails to do so. The entire backline covers for him, Ryan takes his kick return hit ups, we had Lote cleaning up after his botched attempt at fielding a kick, we had Lawrence defusing kicks and Humble making cover tackles because Moltzen was out of position in defence. This is all because he is a bludger and a liability at fullback.

There's a sequence of events occurs regularly every match. Moltzen fields the ball after a kick, running across field to offload to a winger, forcing them to take the hitup and then getting into dummy half to pass to the other winger to take the next hitup. It makes me want to tear my hair out every time I see it. All that time running across field allows the defensive line more time to limit the amount of metres gained from the first hitup and makes our forwards work a lot harder to firstly get back onside and secondly they've got to make more hard yardage up the middle.

Real fullbacks just run it back hard themselves, looking to beat players with their pace and footwork. Blokes like Slater, Hayne and Barba score tries from it. Teams worry about it so much that the Knights and Dragons were deliberately kicking the ball dead to shut down opposition fullbacks.

I don't care what happens, whether he's benched, dropped or permanently switched to another position, just get him out of fullback.

You make some very valid points. Although it was good to see him contest in the air last week (about bloody time), it is criminal that he refuses to run the ball back himself from kick returns.

Like you said, proper fullbacks love kick returns as it gives them some room to move. And occassionally they'll break the line and go the length of the field.

I just don't know what the other options are ATM. I wouldn't mind seeing Beau get another go there, he certainly runs the ball back a hundred miles an hour. But he doesn't offer the same support play that Moltzen does. Surely he could be taught to sniff around the ruck and support the ball carrier more.
