Kenny plays middle
As does Dylan Walker
Kurt Mann and other
Teams are copying the Storm's model with Brandon Smith in the middle

The plan seems to be in most sides. Smaller skillful guys in the middle to run at bigger guys
Bigger guys wider trying to isolate halves

Martin is perfect at this role
Martin is a mongrel who rips in, very little skill in his game

Like i keep saying thats not a bad thing..

Cordner had no skills but was a leader for chooks nsw and aus..

People keep wanting a game breaking 2md rower but its the good with the bad..

Look at fifita... 1.2 mil for the titans...

Yeah on his day hes an animal.. but that happens once every 8 weeks..

Give me a good solid nsw quality hole running reliable backrower in liam on 450k every day of the week..

Fair enough mate. Dont get me wrong... i think hes future is in the front row..

But ive always said i think thats 3 to 4 years away..

Hes ones of those players that could obviously play either..

Atm penrith need him at 2nd row. We just dont have the depth there..

Having said that i thought rikis offloading today in cup was extremley exciting... he was very dangerous.. not as safe or as strong as c smith was in defence and just in general play but riki has that bit of x factor... whether he can transfer that to nrl level is another question..

Just watched replay my question is regarding the penalty try. Previous one there were two kick at goal one from where the try was given and a second one in front of the posts which equals 8 points. This time no kick from where try given only in front of posts equalling only 6 points. Have rules changed?

Penalty try

If the referee believes that a try has been prevented by the defending team's misconduct, the attacking team may be awarded a penalty try. Penalty tries are always awarded under the posts regardless of where the offence took place. The referee "may award a penalty try if, in his opinion, a try would have been scored but for the unfair play of the defending team."

seems it has been changed.

An 8 point try is when the scoring team gets two shots at goal (one in line with where the try was scored, the other in front of the posts) and reflects foul play after the try is scored; most often someone sliding into the person scoring.

a penalty try is a piece of foul play that prevents the try being scored, and the shot at goal is taken from under the posts.

Penalty try is awarded when ref (bunker) believes a try would have been scored if not for illegal play. Conversion from in front. Interpretation changed a few years back and so we're seeing more of them.

"Possible 8 point try" is when a try is scored and the scorer is fouled in the act of scoring. Conversion as normal followed by a penalty in front. This was introduced as a seven point try pre-1983, when a try was only worth 3 points. They are pretty rare.

If you have access to the highlights/replay from our previous home game against Souths, you'll see Taylan May's 8 point try which is a good example between an 8 pointer and a penalty try.

Edit - just realised you were referring to that and it was the cause of your query:)

I just want to LOL at the mob that says "Marto is a middle, he has no skills"! That cut out for the Staines try just proved them wrong. It is not the first time that he has thrown that kind of a pass either, did it multiple times last year.

Marto as a middle would be a little above average. His speed and footwork would be wasted there. Running a little wider is where he does his damage. He runs very good lines as well - another skill wasted in the middle.

2 sides to the game.

He has 22 missed tackles. The most despite playing one less game then some others

While it is only early days you can't have an edge forward with a 78% tackle rate. In the middle suits his defence better as he can run and belt people and have the coverage should he fall off a tackle.

As for attack. lets put some other average 2nd rowers stats up

Luki - 44 mins. 70m gained. 8m per run. 13 tackle breaks. 19 tackles a game. 94% tackle %
Tupouniua - 74 mins. 89m gained. 9m per run. 13 tackle breaks. 25 tackles a game. 88% tackle
Koloamatangi - 72 mins. 109m gained. 8m per run. 13 tackle breaks. 25 tackles a game. 87%

Then Martin

71mins. 80m gained. 7m per run. 11 tackle breaks. 22 tackles a game. 4 missed a game for 78% tackle rate.

So nothing on that screams out he is a 2nd rower. Lack of options likely keeps him there though

You need to consider that it's Martins job to get out off the line and try attack the kickers from the other teams - something that he does a reasonable job of. Granted, he misses a few, but rarely does he fail to put them off of their play. This results in missed tackles, but benefits us in other ways.

Fish does that job ok from the middle. Martin's play would transfer to middle and not lose anything as a side

Ahhh reminds my of the myth of Adam Docker.

No way Martin intended that cut out ball. He just shuffled it on in that general direction, knowing he had players outside him and where it landed, it landed.
