In the past 50, 1971 to 2020, it is 2-all. Unless one of them win this year, it will be 2-1 our way after October.
Yes you are correct of course, wasn't really here to stick up for Souths as I don't actually have a dog in the Souths - Penrith fight ...but I did get to chuck my talking point about Manly in.

I'll see myself out.

I notice the Penrith Panthers have a new tackle tactic to slow down tackles and play the ball when they hit in 2 or 3 tackles. Rather then lie on them and get up slowly or the old wrestle where you now get penalised they hold the player with the ball up. Lift them about…and wait for the ref to call tackle or they loose balance and go to ground….also of course try and carry them backwards and get some metres. .or out of touch…so the rules now have stopped the wrestle and the lying over the ball player to lifting him whilst the defensive line gets back into place. Pretty clever tactic.

well done Ivan.

Those two first half tries from Penrith when we were down on the scoreboard against the Bunnies were pretty amazing. Also I think Tevita Pangai is going to be a force. He just seems to be a point of difference to the charging Fish, Moses and Lenui who hit with great momentum whereas he has size and power

Some words there Penny.
I think you are losing some of your audience with your style.
What you should do is take the bleeding obvious . . . that which every single fan of the game can blatantly see if they have at least one functioning eye . . . . to take that and write it up like it is ONLY you that see it, and it is your duty to make the world aware of what's actually going on, as they carry on in their blissful ignorance.
I love your work. Don't stop supporting them Panthers.

Thanks Rosco, and in that vein I have to say that the tactics in the 2nd half by Penrith were better. Ivan got it wrong in the first half and his ability to change tactics at half time show why he is even a better coach than Bennett and Bellamy put together.

Cleary’s tactical kicking was the game changer.

The point to kick to Mansour and Lattrel was excellent and it showed up a weakness in Mitchel’s game where he seems to shrink when put under pressure. Whether it was a lack of communication or not, the ‘stand, turn your back and look at the ball’ trick just doesn’t cut it, esp for a fullback.

Once Cleary’s tactic worked they kept returning to the fountain that kept on giving.

The Ribbitohs forwards went missing in the 2nd half. No go forward, but just being owned by Kikau and co.

I noticed that George didn’t come back on after being hooked for the high tackle?

The downside to having him off is that you lose your biggest guy, but that’s part and parcel of when you just want to limit your own teams mistakes – he seems to be very mistake prone.

Anyway, Bennett has been here many times before, and he just might have his team humming at just the right time. Finals. That’s where it counts.

But I just think our Penny Panthers have too many guns for them.

The winner gets a week off and then a likely soft prelim opponent. The loser plays the next week then has the Storm in the prelim. The loser v Storm prelim will be much tougher, so the winner of the Souths v Riff qualifier will be in better shape in the big dance.

You're brave calling the Tommy Ts a soft prelim opponent. They will give either panthers or souths as much as they can handle.

I Watched the post match press conference with the great Wayno. When asked about the penalty count he says ‘ we lacked discipline and gave away penalties’.
He also says ‘ we give-away the least penalties in the NRL but were not good tonight.
He says its not something we need to fix. We already have . We just had a bad night.
What a guy he is.
Robbo would have whinged his little belly off , Bellamy would have said how can it be so lopsided and ‘ I don’t understand.’
Wayne says ‘we had a bad night.’
Listen to your coach Souths fans, he’s on the money.

Agreed; you definitely don’t want it to be your team on the receiving end of the bad call, especially in a close game or final. Huge momentum killer.
As I said before, the bunker needs to be reined in to adjudicate on tries only. The MRC is the one that should adjudicate on foul play missed by the ref. Anything else should be left to the refs and touchies. Yes there will be howlers but it’s not as if the bunker has eliminated that!!

Storm have been doing that for ages now.

Why no examination of referee appointments? In particular, a referee – Grant Atkins – a Life Member of the Penrith Referees Association - LOL – was appointed to all four Souths games against Melbourne and Penrith.

Souths have an average of 3 penalties against across the season, yet in the two Penrith games he gives a combined 23-5 count to Penrith (who are in the top 5 teams for penalties conceded). Even if we can say all those penalties were deserved (a few at least were not) how come Penrith clean their act up under him?

Refs do matter, even Wayno can be wrong.

Atkins is not a cheat. That's rubbish. No ref is.

My issue with Atkins is the same with all refs. They referee to tip sheets and are looking for particular areas of the game to focus on. Making these examples up, but they ref to preconceived notions from extensive video analysis e.g. "Damien Cook is often not square at marker" or "Mark Nicholls is often downtown" blah blah and they referee to that. How many times do you hear a ref yell "Player X MOVE!" every time he makes a tackle but not other players.

Because they're so myopic in their approach they miss the bleeding obvious and it infuriates me. Some refs are better at this than others. Atkins too often gets bogged down in specific KPIs that he misses forward passes, offsides, etc but will find any tiny contact with the head (for example).

The last 2 years has seen a shift from structured play to more off-the-cuff attacking footy. It's time the refs followed suit and stopped refereeing to a set list of preconceived ideas and let them make the judgement calls we know they can.

Leave the Bunker to tries and foul play only.

Not every movie can be The Godfather, like the Penrith Panthers v South Rabbitohs game sometimes you have to kick back and enjoy Dumb and Dumber. Broncos and Warriors was Dumb and Dumber

But yes, the general increase in penalties and all teams in general doing well has me worried the NRL has given up yet again un der any sort of pressure. Hopefully it is mostly the players getting it right, so we shall see. The NRL is a small gold fish bowl where everybody copies everybody else so if metrics showed not giving away six agains was better they would all do it quickly.

Souths were very good for the first half hour, then a couple of errors allowed the Penrith Panthers back in it. Bennett would have been livid with that last 10 minutes of first half. Defensively they were pretty solid conceding two tries from kicks and Api strolling over at the end against busted bodies.

Atkins did crucify Souths and some of it justified, however my Penny Panthers were offside regularly in second half and seemed to get away with it all the time. one rule for one and one rule for another.

The NRL like anything is an elitist class riddled organisation

Same deal. Keep them in their end and belt Turbo at every opportunity (legally). Their biggest danger is the sweeping backline raid to Saab's wing. To'o needs to learn to trust his inside man.

My Penny Panthers reminded me a bit of a key aspect of Manly’s play a decade and more back and that is the ability to beat a strong opponent into submission just when they start believing they are in the game with a decent crack at winning.

The Bunnies looked shell-shocked and demoralized when the Pennies went on a defensive rampage.

Our Penny Panthers will only get better.
Cleary 2nd game back from injury & the addition of TPJ solidifies the team.
Premiers 2021.
